The Faculty of Health Engineering, David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, Uburu, has recorded a huge success with its One-Day Academic Workshop held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at the Senate Chambers.
Themed _Building Research Capacity with Integrity and Ethics_, the workshop was described by participants as a timely conversation, knowledge-rich, and impactful. It drew academics, researchers, and postgraduate students who engaged in practical, forward-looking sessions on ethical scholarship and scholarly publishing.
The workshop was hosted by Engr. Prof. Ogbonnaya Chukwu, Dean, Faculty of Health Engineering. The Vice-Chancellor, Dist. Prof. Jesse C. Uneke, though not in attendance, is on record for his strong commitment to building a research culture anchored on integrity, competence and global visibility at DUFUHS. Management conveyed his full support for initiatives that strengthen staff capacity and institutional research output.
The workshop delivered three expert-led focus areas that equipped participants with tools for competitive research and responsible publishing.
Emeritus Distinguished Professor Umezuruike Linus Opara, Executive Director/CEO, UNESCO International Centre for Biotechnology, Nsukka, led Sub-Theme 1 on _Strengthening Research Capacity: Grant Writing and Developing Publishable Manuscripts_. Drawing from decades of international research leadership, Prof. Opara guided participants on building sustainable research skills, identifying strong proposals, and structuring competitive grants and high-quality manuscripts. His session was praised for its depth, practicality, and global perspective.
Prof. Clementina D. Igwebuike-Ossi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academics, DUFUHS, facilitated Sub-Theme 2 on Research Ethics and Institutional Requirements for Academic Growth With her extensive academic and administrative expertise, the DVC Academic broke down the principles of ethical research, the consequences of research misconduct, and the general criteria for academic promotions. Participants described the session as firm, clear, and essential for career progression.
Dr. Simon Uzor, Acting Director of Research, DUFUHS, handled Sub-Theme 3 on _Effective Research Tools and Responsible Publishing: Google Scholar, Plagiarism Prevention, and Avoiding Predatory Journals_. He demonstrated strategies for increasing research visibility and impact, using Google Scholar for credible citation tracking, maintaining academic originality, and identifying legitimate journals while avoiding predatory platforms. The session was noted for being timely and immediately applicable.
In a release from Office of the Public Relations Officer the Universit.the workshop met its objectives of equipping participants with practical skills in ethical research practices, grant writing, manuscript development, and responsible scholarly publishing. It also strengthened capacity to use credible research tools, avoid misconduct, and enhance the visibility and impact of scholarly work.
The University Librarian and Director of Academic Planning, Dr. Kingsley Igwe, was in attendance and part of the conversation too. Feedback from attendees highlighted the quality of facilitation, the relevance of the topics, and the actionable takeaways. Many described the conversations as “deeply needed” at this stage of DUFUHS’ growth.
The Faculty of Health Engineering reaffirms its commitment to capacity-building initiatives that promote academic excellence, research integrity, and institutional visibility.
