The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ebonyi State Council, has called on political actors in the state to shun campaigns of calumny and focus on issue-based politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This was contained in a communique issued at the end of the Council’s Congress held Thursday, July 2nd, 2026, at the Dr. Sam Egwu Press Centre, Abakaliki, and presided over by the Council Chairman, Comrade Nwafor Samson.
Congress noted the ongoing political activities and urged all political actors to "play by the rules" and avoid actions capable of heating up the polity.
The union also commended Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for his interventions in the education sector, particularly the sponsorship of hundreds of Ebonyians on local and overseas scholarships up to doctoral level.
"Congress urged him to remain focused in achieving his administration’s lofty dreams aimed at improving the welfare of Ebonyi people," the communique stated.
The Council expressed concern over the recurrent delay in the distribution of government farm inputs.
It urged government to ensure timely distribution and put mechanisms in place to ensure that only genuine farmers benefit, saying this would encourage more people into agriculture and boost food production.
With the peak of the rainy season approaching, Congress also urged residents of flood-prone areas to adhere strictly to safety protocols issued by NiMET and other relevant agencies.
It further advised against blocking waterways and drainage channels.
Congress noted with concern the recent revocation of allocations at the EBSU Pocket Layout, including the three hectares of land acquired by the NUJ for an estate project with members’ contributions.
It passionately appealed to Governor Nwifuru to allocate alternative land to the Union to enable members to realize their dream of having an estate where they can build and live with their families.
On internal matters, Congress constituted a 5-man committee headed by Council Secretary, Dr. Chinaza Peculiar John, to recommend an official and unique dress code for members of the Ebonyi State Council.
The Council also approved a 7-man 2026 Press Week Planning Committee headed by Comrade Israel Mbam, with Comrade Andy Nwogha as Secretary. Other members are Comrades Uchenna Inya, Lucy Anyim, Godwin Oguta, Chinwe Imo-Eze, and Loveth Onyebuchi. The 2026 Press Week is scheduled for September.
The communique was signed by Comrade Nwafor Samson, Chairman, and Dr. Chinaza Peculiar John, Secretary of NUJ Ebonyi State Council.
