Special Assistant to Governor Francis Nwifuru on Interparty Affairs, Comrade Sunday Nwambam, has tasked political gladiators in Ebonyi APC to respect and accept the decision of the major Stakeholders on Consensus mode of nomination for the sustenance of equity in the distribution of political positions in all the three zones of the state.
Nwambam, in a press statement made available to The Times News, noted that the consensus arrangement adopted by APC is interdem with the 2025 electoral law and the APC electoral guidelines.
He emphasized the need for political actors to refrain from making further political statements capable of heating up the peaceful political landscape which has ensured the delivery of democratic dividends to the people of the state.
"My attention has been drawn to the outcome, suggestions and press releases arising from the meetings organized for the three senatorial zones to decide on the mood of selecting aspirants to fly the flag of the All Progressives Congress for various political positions ahead of next year's General Election in Ebonyi State.
"While the Party Leadership and members of APC have continued to applaud the Leader of the Party, His Excellency, Governor Francis Nwifuru for ensuring that the opinions of major Stakeholders count in the Consensus option, my office is however inundated for reaction over some statements credited to some politicians to the effect that APC should jettison Consensus mode of Nomination and nudge aspirants into Direct Primaries.
"For the avoidance of doubt, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda had few months ago pointed out that the ruling party remains open to adopting any recognised method of primary election, stressing that credibility of the process is more important than the mode chosen.
"The position of the party is hinged on 2026 Electoral Act which restructured the legal framework governing how political parties nominate
candidates for elective offices as contained in sections 84 to 88
"A closer look at the provisions showed that there is a more streamlined legal framework that relies more heavily on internal party rules rather than s thetatutory provisions
"This is why APC has shown a strong preference for the consensus approach to minimize internal conflicts, ensure unity, and secure cost-effective nominations.
"The party leadership has always emphasized that consensus is not an imposition in disguise but a choice born out of mutual consent among all stakeholders.
"Though Democracy provides that the minority must have their say and the majority their way, it is most worrisome that some politicians who have been in positions of trust and enjoyed political loyalty as well as obedience to party decisions chose to be rebellious to the resolve of stakeholders on consensus.
"As the SA to the Governor on Interparty Affairs, I joined well meaning party members to condemn the development as it is absurd and unhealthy for the survival of the party ahead of the election.
"I therefore call on all political actors in the state as a matter of urgency and respect to the Leader of the Party, His Excellency the Governor to;
" Accept the decision of the major Stakeholders on Consensus mode of Nomination for the sustenance of equity in the distribution of political positions in all the three zones of the state.
"Refrain from making further political statements capable of heating up the peaceful political landscape which has ensured the delivery of democratic dividends to the people of the state.
"That considering that His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu had in a meeting with the Governors few days ago directed that they be allowed to conduct processes leading to the emergence of Party flag bearers in their respective states, that His Excellency, Governor Nwifuru did not act outside the mandate given to him as the Leader of the Party.
"That those who are today making opposing and inflammatory statements concerning the choice of consensus for the selection of aspirants enjoined absolute support when they were in similar positions to take such decisions.
"That as the Leader of the Party in the state, Governor Nwifuru has experience to understand the political temperature of the state and avoid gambling with an unpopular mode of selection that may alter the trajectory of victory in the next election.
"That all aspirants who were not favoured in the adoption of consensus should not see it as disappointment but a mechanism to insulate them from wasting time and money.
"I therefore commend the Party Executives led by Chief Stanley Okoroemegha and the Leadership of the state for their boldness in adopting consensus mode of selection as that will ensure seamless emergence of Party flag bearers", he concluded.
