Ebonyi State Government has called on the people of Omege Echara Village in Ikwo Local Government Area to sustain the peace initiatives of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru in the area. The advise was given by the State Commissioner for Boarder Peace and Conflict Resolution, Prof. Paul Awo Nwobashi at the end of the village election held on 16th January, 2026.
The Commissioner who was represented by the HoD Conflict Management of the Ministry, Dr. Martin Igurube thanked the people for their peaceful conduct before, during and after the election which was well attended by stakeholders, women and youths of Omege Echara Village.
Announcing the results of the election, the Commissioner's representative said Mr. Friday Nwonu Polled 397 votes to defeat his opponent, Mr. Michael Nwigboji who scored 370 votes.
Mr. Ebonyi Nwekoyo scored 92 votes to emerge unopposed as the vice chairman, while Mr. Sunday Omunchi got 441 votes to defeat Patrick Ogboloko who scored 364 to emerge as the village Secretary. Mr. Chita Chukwu Udoka was elected the youth President with 450 votes.
"On the Chairmanship position, Mr Friday Nwoñu scored 397, while Nwigboji Michael scored a 370.
On that note, Friday Nwoñu is declared winner and returned elected.
"On issue of a vice-chairman, one candidate declined to contest and Mr Ebonyi Nwekoyo was returned elected with 92 votes. On the secretary position, Mr Patrick Ugbuloke 364 Votes, while Mr Sunday Omunchi scored 441 votes, and on that note, Sunday Omunchi is hereby declared winner and returned elected.
"On the issue of youth,It is still inconclusive until the government
takes final decision based on the issues raised during.
"I want the people of Omege Echara to
remain calm and peaceful and shun anything that will cause breach of peace in the area", he stated.
Also addressing the people, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Internal Security, Ikwo LGA, Hon. Desmond Edeke, called on both winers and losers should accept the outcome of the election, warning that Government will not take it lightly with anyone or group trying to truncate the peace already enthroned in all parts of the state by the State Governor.
The member representing Ikwo North State Constituency, Hon. Ifeanyi Nwakpu appreciated the State Government for intervening in the election, following the nullification of the earlier election in December, 2025. He thanked the people for turning out and called on both winers and losers to work together in the interest of Omega Echara Village.
In his acceptance speech, the new chairman appreciated the people for finding him worthy to serve and assured them of inclusive administration. He called on those who did not emerge to see it as the will of God, and come together to make the village great.
The election was monitored by government officials including the Coordinator of Ikwo Southeast Development Centre, Hon. John Ogodo, security agencies and the media.
