School Resumption; Ebonyi Education Commissioner Tasks Teachers On Diligence To Duty:

The Commissioner for Education, Primary and Secondary, Dr Donatus Ilang, has tasks primary and secondary School teachers to be diligent in the discharge of their duties, as 2025/2026 academic session kicked off on Monday, 12th January, 2026 in all public and private primary and secondary Schools across the state.

Dr Ilang, during the monitoring exercise of schools resumption  in the state, called on parents and guardians to live up to their responsibility of ensuring that their children return to school promptly, noting that lost time cannot be recovered.

Ilang, urged the school principals and Head teachers to intensify teaching and learning activities and ensure that school premises are kept clean, describing teachers as critical stakeholders in character formation. He commended the teachers and some pupils for turning up enmass to school on the day of resumption.

"Well, I must have to commend the teachers, the learners, because many of the schools we visited, we saw a good number of turnout of teachers, and also some school students also turned very well.

"So we want to thank His Excellency, our dear Governor who has provided us the platform upon which we are critically supervising the schools to enhance quality teaching and learning. However, I want to urge the parents to know that the school has already resumed, and they should leave their children to come to school. The teachers should also intensify efforts to see that quality teaching and learning is carried out in our schools. late coming is prohibited, and school neatness should also be maintained.

"The school is still on as we witness in most of the areas we visited.
So in overall, I can say that the resumption can be classified as moderate, and I still want to urge everybody, particularly stakeholders, especially teachers and parents, to see that everybody carries out their own parts. Teachers, come to school on time, stay in school, do your work.
Parents, leave your children to come to school and come on time, prepare them, and ensure that they also come to learn, because this is the future they are propagating for you".

The commissioner assured that efforts are ongoing to improve teachers’ welfare and working conditions, and also address basic infrastructure need in the schools, expressing confidence that positive outcomes would soon be felt.

On her part, the permanent secretary of the ministry, Mrs Mary Otozi enjoined the Head teachers to ensure strick monitoring of students and check the lesson notes of teachers as required. She urged the teachers to justify the huge resource, the state Governor has invested and still investing in Education sector of the state.

Schools visited during the exercise included Girls High School Azuiyiokwu, Azuiyiokwu Primary School, Abakaliki High School Presco, Nnodo Secondary School and Urban Model Secondary School, Abakaliki. Others are Special Science School, Igbegu; practicing school, Igbegu; community secondary School, Nduakabi Igbegu and Igbegu central school 1&2, Ndiechi Onuebonyi primary school; Inyimegu primary school, Azuiyiokwu among others.

Teachers applauded the state Government for prompt payment of December salary and bonuses, assuring of their preparedness to work as the second term commenced.

Those who joined the commissioner during the monitoring exercise included the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Mary Ngozi Otozi, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Secondary Education, Honourable Peter Nwogbaga, alongside directors, heads of departments, media representatives among other key Education stakeholders.
