In a deliberate effort to encourage excellent performance and optimum service delivery in the primary healthcare sector, the Ebonyi State Health Insurance Agency (EBSHIA) on Wednesday, held her 2025 Universal Health coverage Summit and award day.
The summit, held at women Development center Abakaliki, which witnessed the presence of health stakeholders, was organized by EBSHIA to appreciate the efforts of the primary health care officers and reward those with excellent performance in their various health facilities across the 13 local Government Areas of the State.
Speaking during the summit, the commissioner for health, Dr Moses Ekuma, appreciate the positive health impacts made by EBSHIA under the watch of Dr Divine Igwe as the Executive Secretary. He commended officers in charge OICs of primary health facilities for the good work they are doing at the various facilities in the State and urge them to improve on what they have done so far, noting that the state Governor, Francis Nwifuru placed high premium on the health need of Ebonyi people and the residents of the State.
"I want to let us know that what is happening in the Ebonyi State, we don't see it in another state.
It is only in the Ebonyi State that we have the Executive Governor, in the person of His Excellency Right Honorable Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru,
the Governor that has the health sector and the health of Ebonyi resident as one of the priorities.
"The Governor has done, so much in the health sector and I am very happy that many of you know about those things, ranging from employment of health workers to procurement of medical consumables and equipment, to renovation of our health centers, and also for provision of health insurance coverage
for all the civil servants in the state.
"I am sure you are aware of the emergency ambulance service that we have.,we don't have any reason why any patient that needs to be referred should not be referred.
So if there is any challenge, just dial the number and emergency transport driver will come for that patient.
We don't want any maternal mortality or under five mortality in the Ebonyi State again.That is the target of the Ebonyi State government under His Excellency,
Right Honourable Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.
"So I want to appreciate you all in a special way for the services you've been rendering to our women and children and other patients".
Earlier, the Executive Secretary of Ebonyi State Health Insurance Agency (EBSHIA) Dr Divine Igwe, expressed deep appreciation to the officers in charge of various facilities and EBSHIA staff for their dedication to the delivery of health services to the people, urging them to sustain the tempo.
"Let me thank the staff of the state health insurance agency, you're very special people. Starting from the management staff to every other person. Without you, I don't think that this work would have been done.
You're quite exceptional.
"And now, in a most special way, to thank my wonderful and distinguished OICs. It is important to note that without the OICs,
there would not be anything called Ebonyi State Health Insurance Agency (EBSHIA).
"The work we do, the work we see, the work we achieve,
the results we are celebrating
are produced by the wonderful people that are here.
And I am glad that we have the opportunity today to say thank you
for the good work that you are doing.
"Today, we are organizing what we call Universal Health Coverage Summit. This summit would not have existed if not you. So we brought you here again to say thank you.
When we say that we are giving award, the very first award is to say thank you to everybody.
If not that every award must have a winner, I wouldn't have loved anybody calling award here.Because all of you are award winners. So you are now referred to as the award winning OIC.
All of you.Having stepped into this place, you are an award winner.
"And we have a mandate.
And that mandate is that everyone, whether you are tall or you are short,
whether you are fair or you are dark,
will have access to full range of health care that you need,
wherever you need them and whenever you need them, without suffering from financial hardship.
We want to run a system whereby somebody will willingly take himself to a hospital, get treated, and the person will not go and sell his or her parcel of land just to redeem himself from the hospital, neither will the person go to Lapo to borrow money just because there was cesarean session. We want to run a system whereby anybody that wants to go to the hospital will no longer become poorer just because he was admitted in the hospital", Igwe asserted.
The EBSHIA Boss appreciated the healthy partnership with the office of the first lady, Chief Mrs Uzoamaka Ogbonna Nwifuru and the state Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for prioritizing quality healthcare services in the state.
There were good will messages from EBSHIA Board Chairman, Barr. Elizabeth Ogbaga, Ebonyi State coordinator, National Health Insurance Authority, Mr Godwin Mbe, Permanent Secretary, ministry of health, Dr Lawrence Ezeogo, representative of Head of service, Mr Mba Okereke among others.
The award category ranges from Local Government level to zonal and to the overall best state winner.
The overall best winner, Mrs Odo Elizabeth, on behalf of other winners expressed Joy over the honor done them and promised to double their efforts in the discharge of their duties.
Each of the award, according to the EBSHIA Boss, is accompanied with one hundred thousand naira (#100,000) to encourage and boost the morale of the health workers. He enjoined those that did emerge winners this year to work hard to win next year.
