The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has appointed former Chairman of its Ebonyi State Chapter, Comrade Chukwuemeka Opara, as a National Ex-Officio member of the association’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
The appointment, which takes effect from October 9, 2026, was communicated through an official letter signed by SWAN Secretary-General, Ikenna Okonkwo, on behalf of the National President and the national leadership of the association.
The association explained that Opara’s appointment was informed by his wealth of experience, dedication to sports journalism and proven commitment to the growth and development of SWAN.
His elevation to the national executive committee is expected to strengthen the association’s leadership and provide an opportunity for him to contribute to policy formulation, institutional development and the advancement of sports journalism in Nigeria.
As a National Ex-Officio member, Opara is expected to work closely with SWAN National President, Comrade Isaiah Benjamin, other members of the NEC and relevant stakeholders to promote the association’s objectives and advance the interests of sports writers across the country.
The appointment letter also charged him to discharge his responsibilities with diligence, integrity and accountability, while upholding the SWAN Constitution, established regulations and professional standards guiding the association’s operations.
The national leadership further urged the new appointee to contribute meaningfully to initiatives designed to improve members’ welfare, strengthen the institution and promote the overall development of sports journalism in Nigeria.
The appointment, according to the letter, is subject to the relevant provisions of the SWAN Statute and other regulations governing the National Executive Committee.
Congratulating Opara on his appointment, the national leadership expressed confidence in his capacity to bring his experience and professional commitment to bear on the responsibilities of his new office.
The development marks another responsibility for the former Ebonyi State SWAN chairman, whose appointment places him among the association’s national leadership at a time when the promotion of professional standards, members’ welfare and the growth of sports journalism remain important priorities.
Opara’s inclusion in the NEC is expected to provide an additional platform for him to contribute to the association’s programmes and strengthen efforts toward building a more effective and progressive professional body for sports journalists in Nigeria.
