The Department of Mass Communication, Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki, has honoured the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, Comrade Chinedu Samson Nwafor, with an Award of Excellence for his contributions to ethical journalism and the promotion of objective reporting.
The award was presented during an international conference organised by the department in recognition of Nwafor’s commitment to professional journalism and his efforts towards promoting peace and development in Ebonyi State.
Speaking after receiving the award, Nwafor expressed gratitude to God, describing the recognition as particularly meaningful because it came from his alma mater, where he received the academic training that shaped his journalism career.
He said the honour held a special place in his heart, noting that his professional journey was significantly influenced by the knowledge and experience he acquired at the institution.
“Personally, I am happy to receive this award today. Unlike many other recognitions I have received in the past, this one came from the department where I graduated.
“The department made me what I am today. I became a journalist as a result of the training I received at EBSU,” he said.
The NUJ chairman described the award as an encouragement to deepen his commitment to journalism and uphold the professional standards required to advance society.
He pledged to continue setting a positive example for younger journalists and promoting responsible journalism that contributes to societal growth.
“I will continue to do my best to keep the flag flying and live an exemplary life that will encourage others to join the profession.
“Journalism is a profession that deserves more practitioners because the more we contribute, the better the society becomes. We set the agenda for society and must do our best to get things right,” Nwafor stated.
He commended the organisers of the international conference and the leadership of the Department of Mass Communication for recognising his contributions to the profession.
Nwafor specifically appreciated the Head of the Department, Dr Simon Nwankwo, other members of the department and the university management for making the recognition possible.
Reaffirming his commitment to the advancement of journalism in Ebonyi State, the NUJ chairman stressed the need for practitioners to discharge their duties with professionalism, objectivity and a strong sense of responsibility.
He urged journalists to remain faithful to the ethics of their profession, promote peaceful coexistence and use their platforms to advance development through credible, balanced and responsible reporting.
