2027: Anyichuks To Drop Guber Ambition, Support Governor Nwifuru

By Celestine Okeh,

ABAKALIKI — Intense political maneuvering and speculations have enveloped Ebonyi State ahead of the 2027 governorship election, following a massive wave of alignments, pressure from stakeholders, and high-profile interventions urging the opposition to step down for the incumbent.
The political atmosphere in the state reached a new peak after the Minister of Works and former Governor of the State, Senator David Umahi, publicly vowed to personally intervene and convince the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Chief Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii (popularly known as Anyichuks), to withdraw from the race and support Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.

Speaking during an address to prominent political stakeholders at Uburu in the Ohaozara Local Government Area, Senator Umahi insisted that the state's traditional power rotation agreement must be strictly respected. According to Umahi, the governorship seat has not yet returned to the Ebonyi South Senatorial District—the zone that produced him as governor between 2015 and 2023.
"I will personally engage Odii at the appropriate time," Umahi stated, stressing that the existing zoning template underpins the state’s political stability and should not be disrupted ahead of 2027.

This call aligns with mounting pressure from local youth and elite coalitions. The Ebonyi South Youth Assembly explicitly called on Anyichuks to abandon his 2027 gubernatorial ambitions, arguing that contesting would directly violate the state's established charter of equity. Furthermore, powerful local voting blocs, including the Onicha Igboeze clan (Anyichuks' immediate political base), have shifted alliances, openly declaring their solidarity and support for Governor Nwifuru's second-term bid.

Opposing Camps React to the Realignment Rumours
While the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and various socio-political movements continue to push for a unified consensus behind Governor Nwifuru, the opposition camp has pushed back against claims of an imminent surrender.

Nevertheless, with massive political groups like the Ikwo Elites Progressives Movement rallying behind the Governor and top political heavyweights actively working to slim down opposition numbers, observers believe that ongoing backchannel negotiations may heavily impact Anyichuks' ultimate trajectory as 2027 draws near.
