The Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command, CP Hope Urunwa Okafor, psc, mnips, has received representatives of various political parties in the State under the aegis of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), assuring them of the Command’s preparedness to provide a secure and level playing field for the forthcoming Local Government elections and the 2027 general elections.
In her remarks, the Commissioner assured the political parties that the Command is fully prepared for the Local Government elections and the 2027 electioneering activities, which commenced on Wednesday, 19th August 2026. She emphasised that the Nigeria Police Force, Ebonyi State Command, remains committed to ensuring that all political parties and candidates are given equal opportunity to conduct their lawful activities in a peaceful, fair, equitable and transparent environment.
The CP urged the political parties and their supporters to ensure that their words and actions contribute to peace and stability in the State. She cautioned against inflammatory rhetoric, provocative statements and actions capable of escalating political disagreements into violence during the campaign period.
She further requested all political parties to submit their campaign schedules to the Command well in advance to enable effective security planning and coordination. She specifically requested details of proposed campaign dates, venues, locations and other relevant information, noting that such information would assist the Command in harmonising its security operations and preventing issue that could arise from political parties holding rallies or other activities in proximate locations.
The Commissioner stated that applications for security coverage of political activities would be treated on a first-come, first-served basis. She, however, frowned at the practice of some individuals requesting police security only a few hours before their scheduled events, describing the practice as unacceptable and warning that the Command would not tolerate such last-minute arrangements.
She explained that the essence of the meeting was to strengthen collaboration with political parties and ensure that all political activities are conducted peacefully and within the ambit of the law. She stressed that while the Command would remain professional, impartial and committed to facilitating lawful political activities, it would not hesitate to enforce the law against anyone who violates it, irrespective of political affiliation or status.
The Commissioner also issued a strong warning against political thuggery, stressing that there is no room for thuggery or other forms of political violence in Ebonyi State. She urged political actors to educate and restrain their supporters from engaging in acts capable of disrupting the peace and security of the State.
In her response, the Chairperson of IPAC in Ebonyi State, Hon. Mrs. Queendaline Nwigwe, appreciated the Commissioner for receiving the representatives and for her commitment to maintaining peace throughout the political process. She affirmed that IPAC would continue to preach peace among its members, noting that chaos and violence ultimately affect everyone, irrespective of political party affiliation.
On the sidelines of the meeting, representatives of the various political parties signed a peace accord, pledging their commitment to peaceful conduct before, during and after the Local Government elections in the State.
