Ebonyi State Government has upheld the resolution of the elders of Amagu Izzi on the land dispute between the family of Nkwegu Ijere and the people of Onyirigbo village, which led to the exhuming of body of late Nkwegu Ijere and buried in an unknown place at the order of the traditional ruler,
HRH Eze Stephen Akpagharu, traditional ruler of Ngbalukwu Community in Izzi Local Government Area of the state.
Presenting government's position to the people in his office, the Hon Commissioner for Border Peace and Conflict Resolution Prof Paul Awo Nwobasi said that government aligned with the resolution of the council of elders of Amagu Izzi which revolves around peace being the fulcrum of this present administration of Gov Francis Nwifuru.
He enumerated the resolution of the elders to include a total condemnation of injustice against the late Nkwegu Ijere family by the people of Onyirigbo and mandated the community to present one cow, one goat, one fowl, three fathoms of wrapper, drinks and a casket to the late Nkwegu Ijere family for the proper burial of their father who was exhumed from his bona fide land.
The traditional ruler of the community HRH Eze Stephen Akpagharu among other resolutions of the council, was also indicted for giving his consent to such an obnoxious practice and was fined a live cow and six cartons of beer to be presented to the elders council for the cleansing of the bad omen on Izzi land, failure to abide by the decision would attract heavy sections.
They were given till October, 26th 2026 to complete the process.
Earlier while laying the background of the matter, the head of conflict management in the ministry Dr Martin Igurube recalled that the matter was first brought to ministry but was referred to the traditional council as it bothered on customs and traditions of Izzi land.
The coordinator of Izzi Dev Centre Hon Paschal Obiya who was among the delegation that visited the Amegu council of elders attested to the judgement of the elders council.
