The Association of Medical Biochemists Nigeria (AMBN), an umbrella Union of Physicians with specialist training / advanced degrees in Medical / Clinical Biochemistry in Nigeria, has nominated four distinguished Professors of Medicine for conferment of it's Foundation Fellowship.
According to Dr. Anthony Fidelis Uwah, an Associate Professor of Medical Biochemistry at the College of Medicine, University of Uyo, who is the LOC Chairman of the 2026 AMBN Annual General Meeting holding at Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the nomination of the Potential Foundation Fellows, was informed by the scholarly contributions, mentorship services and pioneering works of the individuals in the field of Medical Biochemistry which is a specialized area of Medicine designed for Medical Doctors & Dental Surgeons who have advanced Postgraduate degrees in Medical Biochemistry, Clinical Chemistry or Chemical Pathology in addition to contributing in research, mentorship and applications of innovative knowledge in addressing the challenges facing the practice of Medicine both globally and in Nigeria.
Among those nominated for the Fellowship Award is Professor Henry C. Uro-Chukwu, an Ebonyi State- born Physician, who is not just the First Physician in Africa to earn a PhD in Food Science & Technology cum Human Nutrition but also with another PhD in Medical Biochemistry from Rivers State University, he became the First PhD graduate of the College of Medicine, Rivers State University.
Professor Uro-Chukwu, who serves currently as a Professor of Medical Biochemistry & Nutritional Therapeutics, at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alike, Ikwo, Ebonyi State, is the first Full Professor of Nutritional Therapeutics in Nigeria, with a lot of his research works focusing on nutraceuticals and nutritional management of Chronic Diseases in clinical settings.
Google scholars' search credited him with over ninety (90) scholarly works published in high impact journals such as Web of Science, Scopus and Scimago-ranked Journals .
An alumnus of The University of PortHarcourt, Nigeria, University of Westminster London and University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK, Professor Uro-Chukwu has practiced Medicine for over three decades and equally published ten peer-reviewed textbooks in the areas of Medical & Clinical Biochemistry, Public Health and Clinical Nutrition.
A core clinician, Physician- Biochemist, Administrator, Educationist, Policy Maker and scholar, reputed to have supervised over forty (40) MSc Projects to completion, another 18 MSc Project candidates at various stages, and at least twenty (20) PhD candidates' thesis, nearing completion, his mentor-mentee relationship, have been variously described as legendary.
With multiple Postgraduate degrees in various areas and a full Professor in three different Specialties of Medicine, Uro-Chukwu, is a Master Class facilitator, a Consultant to many International agencies and a founding member of AMBN where he serves as a BOT member.
Equally nominated for the Foundation Fellowship Award is Professor Blessing Oaikhena Idonije, Acting Provost of College of Medicine, Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, a Physician and Professor of Clinical Biochemistry whose works in Enzymology, Bioenergetics and Toxicology, have received over 800 citations on Google Scholar. Idonije is a Fellow of Academy of Medical Specialties of Nigeria and the current National President of AMBN.
The third nominee is Prof Mustapha Iman of Uthman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto, but currently on sabbatical at the Federal University, Lafia. He is the first Professor of Nutrigenomics, a subspecialty in Medical Biochemistry, in Nigeria and a Physician with a PhD in Molecular Biotechnology from University of Putra, Malaysia. Professor Iman has researched elaborately in metabolic diseases, micronutrients, epigenetics and preventive medicine.
The Fourth Professor is Professor Lukeman Adewale Alli, of University of Abuja College of Medicine, a graduate of University of Ilorin and who is credited with the Prestigious Quality Research Grand Challenge Research Fund Award from Liverpool, John Moore University, UK, has over 500 citations, h-index of 12 and I10-index of 14 according to Google metrics, already reputed with significant works in genetics and sickle cell Disease. Professor Alli had completed Fellowship programs in several institutes including Norvatis Institute for Biomedical Research and National Institute of Health in 2019.
Both the National President of the Association, and the BOT Chairman, AMBN, Prof Ezekwe Afamefula of the College of Medicine, Rivers State University are all poised for a great AGM at Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, come June 23rd - 26th, 2026.
