Education Commissioner Seeks Improved Welfare for Teachers

From Emmanuel Igwe

The Commissioner for Education, Primary and Secondary, Ambassador Dr Donatus Chukwuma Ilang, has called for greater attention to the welfare of teachers and local government staff, urging them to remain supportive, prayerful and resilient as efforts continue to resolve challenges related to delayed salaries and unpaid Christmas bonuses.

Dr Ilang made the appeal during a stakeholders’ meeting held in his office, which brought together representatives of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, the Secondary Education Board, directors from the Ministry of Education, the Universal Basic Education Board, the Trade Union Congress, JASPANS, ALGON and education secretaries.

He said the meeting was convened to identify practical ways to address bottlenecks in the sector, particularly delays in salary payments. Dr Ilang stressed that the governor, His Excellency Rt Hon Builder Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, remains committed to the welfare of workers and the overall development of education in the state.

The commissioner thanked the stakeholders for attending in large numbers and for their willingness to deliberate on the pressing concerns affecting teachers and local government staff. He said collective engagement was essential to finding lasting solutions.

Speaking at the meeting, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Professor Ogugua Egwu, appealed to the relevant authorities to urgently intervene to ease the hardship faced by teachers and local government workers. He warned that prolonged delays in salaries could erode morale and weaken the education sector.

Earlier, the ALGON Chairman, Barrister Uburu Chinedu, offered insights into some of the challenges confronting local governments. He assured stakeholders that his team, in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, is working steadily to address the issues and restore confidence among affected staff.        The Permanent Secretary, Hon Mrs. Mary Ngozi Otozi, thanked the commissioner for the meeting and appealed to every hand to be on desk to achieve the objectives of the meeting.
