PDP Remains Nigerian's Hope - Chief Kevin Tobias

By Celestine Okeh

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and First Vice Chairman of the party in Ebonyi Central Zone, Honourable Chief Kevin Tobias Chukwu, has reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to national unity, economic recovery, and inclusive governance.

Tobias spoke in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, during the 58th birthday celebration and book launch in honour of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, organised by the National Vice Chairman of the PDP, South East, Chief Ali Odefa.

Speaking to journalists at the event, Tobias described the gathering as more than a political meeting, noting that it symbolised unity, solidarity, and appreciation for leadership that cuts across ethnic and regional lines.

“We are here to celebrate the birthday of Governor Seyi Makinde and also to witness the naming ceremony of a child in the family of Chief Ali Odefa after him. This is not strictly a PDP affair, but a celebration of unity and friendship across Nigeria,” Tobias said.

He explained that the strong presence of PDP loyalists at the event was a show of appreciation for Makinde’s role in stabilising the party and strengthening democratic ideals.

“Governor Makinde has shown uncommon commitment to holding the PDP together through difficult times. As party loyalists, we are here to show solidarity and appreciate the strength and love he has shown to the party and the nation,” he added.

Tobias revealed the significance of an Igbo family naming a child after a Yoruba governor, describing it as a powerful message of national cohesion.

“When a Yoruba man has a namesake in Igbo land, it tells us clearly that we are one Nigeria. That child bearing the name ‘Makinde’ represents unity beyond tribe or ethnicity,” he said.

On the party’s prospects ahead of future elections, Tobias expressed confidence that the PDP remains best positioned to address Nigeria’s economic and social challenges.

“Nigeria is currently in an economic quagmire. But with the right candidate, the PDP can make a difference. During the 16 years PDP was in power, things were not this difficult. PDP is a people-oriented party, concerned about welfare, survival, and human development,” he stated.

He further noted that public frustration across the country underscored the need for a return to people-focused governance.

“Today, nobody is smiling; people are angry and unhappy. With PDP leadership, Nigerians will smile again,” Tobias said.

The PDP stakeholder also expressed optimism about the party’s rebuilding process under its national leadership.

“With the emergence of our national chairman, Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN, and the continued engagement of stakeholders across the country, the PDP is gradually repositioning itself. We are getting there,” he added.

Earlier, Governor Seyi Makinde reiterated his call for true federalism and unity in diversity, urging Nigerians to actively participate in shaping the country’s political future.
Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State, represented by his deputy, Princess Patricia Obila, praised Makinde’s governance style, describing him as a model of effective leadership.

The event attracted PDP leaders, stakeholders, and supporters from across the country, reinforcing calls for national unity and renewed democratic engagement.
