The Chairman, Committee on Youth and Sports Development in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon. Victor Nwoke, has called on youths in the state to take full advantage of Governor Francis Nwifuru’s youth-friendly policies on sports development by engaging in various sporting activities beyond football.
Hon. Nwoke, who represents Abakaliki North State Constituency, made the call on Sunday during the official flag-off of the 2025 League of the Great Coventry Football Club held at Girls High School, Abakaliki.
He commended the organisers of the league for their efforts in promoting grassroots sports development and urged young people to harness their talents in other areas such as athletics, basketball, volleyball, and table tennis, among others.
According to him, Governor Nwifuru’s administration is committed to creating platforms that would enable young people to realize their potential through sports, stressing that sports remain a veritable tool for youth empowerment and societal development.
The lawmaker further encouraged community-based sports initiatives, noting that they complement government’s efforts in discovering and nurturing local talents.
He assured that the House Committee on Youth and Sports Development would continue to partner with relevant stakeholders to strengthen the state’s sports sector and create more opportunities for the youth.
The Councillors representing Abakpa Ward 1, Comrade Nwankwegu Nkemdirichukwu advised the youth to embrace sports as it's a venture to pursue once career and appreciate the state governor for bringing back to the youths of the state.
Earlier , the Great Coventry Football Club's chairman, Mr Toochukwu Nwali appreciated the state lawmaker for his support to the team and assured of their continuous support to the governor of the state, Francis Nwifuru while pledging unalloyed support to the lawmaker.
The team captain, Mr. Okorie Chidiebere, and pioneer member of the club, Mr Ugochukwu Onyekaonwu described sports as the only game that unite the youth and appealed for more support to concern individuals to make the league a success.
