By Our Reporter,

A new phase has opened for the Ebonyi State Civil Service Commission following the assumption of office by Lady( Mrs) Virginia O. Oketa as chairman of the commission. The brief ceremony, held at Block 10, Centenary City, Abakaliki, marked a smooth transition of leadership.

The event began with a Holy Mass officiated by Rev Fr Charles Otu, of the Bishop Court,  Pastoral Centre, Mile 50, Abakaliki. He dedicated the office to God and prayed for divine protection, wisdom, and guidance for Mrs Oketa in the discharge of her duties. Declaring the office open, he urged public officers to view positions of authority as a call to serve humanity. Prayers were also offered for the state government, the commission, and its workforce.

The occasion was attended by commission staff, friends, and associates, who gathered to welcome the incoming Chairman.

Speaking on behalf of the former chairman, Chief Chris Uchaji described Mrs Oketa as a woman of deep insight whose years of public service stand as testimony to her competence and commitment. He called on staff to support her administration and sustain a culture of unity and cooperation within the commission.

In her response, Mrs Oketa expressed gratitude to the state governor, Rt Hon Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, for entrusting her with the responsibility of leading the commission. She also appreciated the clergy, staff, and well-wishers present at the event, pledging loyalty to the government and promising to serve with humility and the fear of God.

In a related development, Mrs Oketa charged civil servants in the state to uphold discipline, honesty, and accountability as key values in delivering effective public service. Speaking at the commission’s third general meeting, she emphasised the importance of accurate record keeping across ministries and agencies.

She commended Governor Nwifuru for approving an additional twenty thousand naira on workers’ salaries, describing it as a measure that strengthens staff welfare and supports households across the state. She urged workers to embrace punctuality, dedication, and renewed commitment to duty as a way of justifying their earnings and contributing to the overall progress of the state.
