Education Commissoner Launches Surprise Inspection of Illegal Schools

By Emmanuel Obinna Igwe

The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Education, Dr Donatus Chukwuma Ilang, has begun a surprise inspection of public and private schools across the state to align institutions with Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s education vision.

The exercise opened with a visit to King David Gifted Academy, Centenary City, Abakaliki, where the commissioner assessed facilities and discussed academic improvements with school management, with particular focus on skills acquisition and entrepreneurship courses. Dr Ilang stressed that integrity and honesty must guide the inspections.

The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs Mary Ngozi Otozi, criticised the reopening of substandard schools by some proprietors despite repeated meetings and warnings from the state government. She urged proprietors to follow due process and noted that the ministry has not banned the establishment of schools in the state.

Mrs Otozi also emphasised the need to equip pupils with practical skills that will enable them to compete in an increasingly technology driven economy.

Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Secondary Education, Hon Peter Nwogbaga, appealed to parents and guardians to enrol their children in government or approved private schools. He affirmed the government’s readiness to arrest and prosecute offenders and urged proprietors to comply with regulatory requirements.

Not fewer than 71 teachers and proprietors were arrested by security operatives between 22 and 23 September 2025, signalling the commissioner’s determination that it is not business as usual. Over 201 illegal and substandard schools have been shut down in a 15 day operation. Further inspections and enforcement actions are under way.
