Speaker Moses Odunwa; Impacting Lives Through Free Medical Outreach

By Celestine Okeh, Abakaliki

The monthly free medical outreach sponsored by the speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Moses Ije Odunwa, has continued to impact lives positively, at remotest part of Ikwo South Constituency in Ikwo local Government Area of the state.

Most inspiring is the fact that the major beneficiaries of the medical intervention are the vulnerable pregnant women, indigent nursing mothers, the helpless children and aged men and women.

The speaker had always emphasized that the essence of the free medical outreach was to bridge the medical gap between those at the urban and the rural dwellers and ameloriate their suffering especially, the vulnerable constituents, in line with the people's charter of needs mantra of Governor Francis Nwifuru's administration.

On Saturday, 13th day of May, 2025, the medical team took the free medical outreach to MDG primary healthcare Center, Ogagbo igbudu village where over 300 pregnant mothers, nursing mothers and the elderly ones were given free medical care.

The free medical outreach is in collaboration with Ebonyi State Ministry of Health, BERWO Foundation, and Baby Shower Initiative.

Chief Odunwa, who was represented by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Theophilus Igwe, described heath as a key to societal growth and development, and enjoined the beneficiaries to always support the administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru, by remaining peaceful and law-abiding, emphasizing that peace begets progress in every society.
"Health is very fundamental to societal growth and development. Mr Speaker has so much interest in health, to compliment the efforts of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, and Her Excellency, Chief Mrs Mary-maudline Uzoamka Nwifuru in ensuring that everybody enjoys good health."

speaking to our Journalists during the outreach, the Desk Officer of the Baby Shower Initiative in the state and leader of the team, Aloh Ngozi (popularly known as NG Black gave a detailed breakdown of the day’s turnout:

“Today, we recorded about 85 under-one children. We also have under-five children above one year, pregnant women, the aged—both male and female—and the youths. Altogether, we have over 300 clients today.”
She added that while no challenges were recorded, the volume of attendees shows a need to extend the outreach duration in future visits:

“This program is supposed to be two days per facility. As you can see, we can’t finish attending to everyone today. So next time, we’ll plan for two days in each community to reach more people.”

Ngozi also raised a concern of health observation:

“Looking at the patients’ cards, we noticed that their blood pressure is very high. Almost 70% of the adults are affected. We need to come back for community needs assessment and sensitization. Health education is key—without behavioral change, the health issues will persist even after treatment.”

She appreciated the Ministry of Health and key stakeholders for their support:

“The Speaker has been supporting us, but without the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Moses Ikenna Ekuma, we won’t be here. I also want to thank Her Excellency, Chief Mrs. Uzoamaka Mary-Maudline Ogbonna Nwifuru for collaborating with the Speaker. Your people love and appreciate you.”
Some of the beneficiaries, including Igwe Chisom, Deacon Ufopu Simon from Ume Igbudu, and Idaiya ThankGod from Ogagbo Igbudu, expressed heartfelt gratitude.

“I’m very grateful and happy for the effort of our brother, Mr. Ije Odunwa Moses—for how he takes care of our mothers, brothers, and elders. We’re thankful to the Ebonyi State Government for providing the support. All the people of Ndieagu Igbudu are happy today. We will support him in all his endeavors—even if he wants to become President,” one of them remarked with joy.

Rt. Hon. Moses Odunwa’s initiative continues to win hearts and improve lives across Ikwo South, standing as a testament to people-centered leadership.

The medical team which comprised of medical Doctors, Nurses,  pharmacists, laboratory technician, medical recorders among others, conducted checks on the patients, administered drugs to them and distributed diapers to nursing mothers.
