Gov's Wife Pledges To End FGM Practice In Ebonyi

The Wife of the executive Governor of Ebonyi State Chief (Mrs) Mary Uzomaka Nwifuru has pledged her adminstration readiness to end the practice of female genital mutilation FGM in all the nooks and crannies of the State.

She made the pledge while receiving the delegation from the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICELF) who paid her a courtesy visit in her office in Abakaliki, the State capital.

The Governor's wife while commending the team for the visit, noted  that FGM has caused a lot of problem to women in the society.

She said that her office would partner with  UNICELF and work together with the State  Ministry of health and women affairs to fight the menace to the stand still.

She however added that her office would stop at nothing in ensuring that the lives of Ebonyi children are well protected. 


Earlier in his remarks, the Country's officer of UNICELF Abuja office Mr Godwin Odoh said they were in her office to seek partnership with the State Government to ensure the issue of child protection is implemented in its fullest time.

He added that UNICELF has been working for promotion, protection and well the being of children in the State and expressed their avowed commitment towards  strengthening the existing Community base child protection across the State.

However, he stressed the need to appoint auxiliary social workers that would  inculcate rural women the need to stop FGM practices in their respective communities in Ebonyi State.

Our correspondent reports that wife of the Governor was later decorated as ambassador by the UNICELF delegation.
