New Policy: Only NECO certificate can gaurantee Nigerians to study abroad - Lawyer

BY VICTOR NWEGEDE

An Ebonyi born Lawyer and the Proprietor of Kingdom Model Secondary School in the State, Barr Agbom Friday Agbom has revealed that a new policy which considers NECO as the only indigenous examination certificate that can guarantee Nigerians the opportunity to study in abroad is on the pipeline.

Barr Agbom made the disclosure in an interview with journalists during the weekend when visited his school.

He however, urged students to stop thinking that NECO certificate is inferior to that of  the WAEC.

"Though students prefer to write WAEC in case they want to further education in abroad. But there's a new policy, that as it stands now for you as a Nigerian to study abroad, you must have a national certificate, and the only indigenous certificate we have is NECO and that's why we want to encourage the students to subscribe to writing NECO," Barr. Agbom said.

The School Proprietor further stated that students have been showing ill feelings about NECO, which resulted into poor patronage of the exam unlike WAEC.

"On a very serious note, it has been very challenging, and a battle between us, the  students and their parents because of the ill feelings people have about NECO. I call it ill feelings because they take NECO to be inferior to WAEC. But we know NECO as the only national certificate we have, should be encouraged," he added.

According to him, students have been persuaded to sit for both NECO and WAEC, as they have equal status, still NECO continues recording poor patronage.

He commended NECO for having started its exam before WAEC this year and stressed it "may  be because of COVID-19, that WAEC now galloped to August, and NECO coming first by retaining its normal timetable."

Agbom added: "I want to state that if NECO should be coming first before WAEC, is very encouraging because it will now make the students to know that what we used to tell them about the effectiveness of NECO is correct. So, as our national examination certificate, we are encouraging our people go into it.

"You supposed to have a National Examination Certificate because a new policy is being introduced, that for you to study abroad, you must have the indigenous certificate. NECO is becoming a world recognized certificate, and if that should be done very soon, people should be patronizing NECO more than WAEC."

He therefore, called all hands to be on deck to ensure quality education across the nation, saying his school is committed to continue setting standard, expressing joy that students who graduated from the institution have been making  him proud both home and abroad academically and other wise.
