Ebonyi State Government under the  leadership of Governor David Nweze Umahi has unveiled its readiness to engage youths in different sporting events in order to select best ones and exposed them for future opportunities in the sports world.

The Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development in Ebonyi State, Chief Charles Akpuenika made this known in a press briefing after the state's Executive Council meeting at Old Government House, Abakaliki, last Thursday.

He recalled the last day of 2021 ENDSARS Summit in the state, when Governor Umahi promised Ebonyians that both male and female state teams would be formed due to his love and passion for sports development.

Akpuenika stated that Umahi's government was not only to form sports teams, "but to procure slots for the preparation against 2021/2022 National League Competitions."

He said, the Exco got approval as made by the state Commissioner for Education, Chief Onyebuchi Chima, to commence school sports.

He noted that the school sports would  start with school inter-house sports before moving to local government elimination; after which, the zonal eliminations could take place, to determine those qualified for the state final.

The Executive Council, according to Akpuenika, has also given approval for the first edition of 'king David Supper Cup;'  - the competition which he said would engage all the state constituencies in Ebonyi only on football and NYSC inclusive.

The commissioner said that the Executive Council equally approved the 'First Rachel Female Supper Cup', to engage young ladies in the state in sports activities.

He further disclosed the approval of the 'Second Edition of DUNTGA Games' held about three years ago to engage all the state tertiary institutions in football competitions, with a view of selecting the best legs among the participants.

He thus, mentioned some other sporting events to be held in the state apart from football tournaments.

"We are going to add other sporting events not only football. We shall have volleyball, basketball and others.

"We also got approval for another edition of Governor Umahi paramilitary games, we had this about three years ago. We engaged all the security agencies. This idea also is to bring paramilitary agencies together and select the best legs which may form our state teams and finally, the governor's cup.

"The idea of all these approvals is to engage our youths to give us the opportunity to expose the gifted ones and pick best among them, and prepare them for further challenges," Akpuenika said.
