2021 Izhi football league gets underway as Ebonyi Speaker urges players to imbibe spirit of sportsmanship


...Says the competition will deepen Izhi unity

The Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Chief Francis Nwifuru says the peace and unity of Izhi clan is not negotiable.

The Speaker made the observation during the official kick off of the 2021 season of Izhi Football League organized by Izhi Football Association at the Amegu ancestral home in Abakaliki Local Government Area of the State.

The Izhi Football League sponsored by the Speaker, Chief Francis Nwifuru is an annual competition which was first launched in 2003.

The competition features a team each from the various Development Centres in Izhi land competing for honours.

The Speaker said the competition was organized to further deepen the existing Unity in Izhi land and appealed to stakeholders of the clan to support and encourage the prevailing unity.

He enjoined leaders of the State and nation to disregard the propaganda of enemies of Izhi clan who ascribe division to the clan insisting that Izhi remains united and indivisible.


Chairman of the Occasion and former Commissioner for Local Government Chieftaincy, Matters and Rural Development, Chief Mathias Adum thanked the Speaker for sponsoring the competition and called for collaboration of stakeholders to realize Izhi agenda.


 Other stakeholders including the Chairman of Ebonyi Local Government Area, Mrs Chinyere Nwogbaga, Former Minister for Power and Steel, Chief Goddy Ogbaga, former Commissioner for Agriculture, Chief Romanus Nwasum, Chairman Izhi Forum, Chief Sunday Oketa, Chairman, Izhi Football Association Chief Boniface Ezzaegu and Former Chairman of EBSIEC Dr. John Nkwuda commended the Speaker for the initiative and promised to support the idea which is to further deepen Izhi unity.


The opening match featured the Super Stars of Abakaliki DC locking horns with the Lucky Stars of Ebiya DC which ended in a goaless draw at the end of 90 minutes.

The competition continues until the 31st of March 2021.
