Water Resources Minister marks 2020 Global Handwashing Day Celebrations

 





The Honourable Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman H. Adamu marked the 2020 Global Handwashing Day celebrations at the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre along with the  Environmental Minister, Dr. Muhammad Mahmood Abubakar and the representatives of other ministers from the sister ministries on October 15, 2020.

NATIONAL PANEL gathered that the representatives of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, represented by Mrs. Karimah Babangida, and that of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development honoured the event held on Thursday 15th October, 2020.


"Our visit today to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje is to ensure, in line with this year's theme, that everyone, everywhere, including our inmates, have access to hygiene facilities as a basic necessity", Adamu said in his keynote address. 


He added that handwashing with soap and water reduces the incidence of diarrhea, and prevent the outbreak of many communicable diseases such ebola, Lassa fever and COVID-19 infection.

 Adoption of handwashing with soap as an ingrained behaviour was adjudged as one of the most effective and inexpensive ways to prevent disease, cutting deaths from diarrhoea by almost one- half and deaths from acute respiratory infections by nearly a quarter. 


He said that the joint efforts of Government and stakeholders at all levels in raising awareness on handwashing at critical times would lead to the needed behavioural change, thereby producing a healthy society and economically buoyant nation.

The 2020 Global Handwashing day which centred on "Hand Hygeine for all"  was organised by the National Task Group on Sanitation (NTGS) with the support of Reckitt Benckiser, WaterAid, WSCCC, Action Against Hunger, Procter and Gamble, OPS-WASH, UNICEF and other Development Partners.

The highlights of the event included donation of some gift items were Federal Government, OPS-WASH and other Partners. 

The event also took place at Nyanya Motor-Park and Garki Market all in FCT, Abuja with the distribution of handbills, demonstration of simple handwashing techniques by using soap and water, distribution of soaps with the creation of awareness on the benefits of regular handwashing at critical times.
