Herders: Ebonyi talks tough on night grazing, others

Ebonyi State Government has reiterated warning against night grazing among herders, urging violators to desist from it and obey the laws of the land.

The government also warned against under-age grazing, rearing of cow on farmland, urgeing all hands to be on deck to ensure peaceful and harmonious coexistence among citizens across communities in the state.

Mr. Hycianth Nwode, Chairman, Ebonyi Local Government Advisory Committee made the remark during a security meeting on Thursday at Afikpo North local government area of the state.

Nwode said, the meeting aimed at averting further herders and farmers clashes in the state involved his members, leadership of the Miyetti Allah, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), traditional rulers, Presidents and Secretaries of town union, Councillors, Liaison Officers among others. 

"The herders should restrain their cows from destroying crops belonging to farmers, likewise the farmers should stop the killing of cows belonging to herders. There is need to be an ambassador for peace.

"The Government of Ebonyi will not fold arms and allow anybody to truncate the already existing peace in the State. Love one another, let us know that development can only strive in the atmosphere of peace.

"From today, we charge the police in the the area and other parts of the state to swing into action. The police should begin the arrest of underage herders and those engaging in night grazing," Nwode stated.

In his remark, Mr. Isa Baco, Saraki of House Community in Ebonyi suggested that to checkmate herders and farmers clashes, the government should begin registration and issuance of identity card to herdsmen  operating in the state. 

"We support every laws aims at ensuring peace; we do not support under age and night grazing, but we will go back to our people and educate them for improving peace for a better Nigeria," he stated 

Mr. Edward Chukwu, Traditional Rulers, Oziza Community, Afikpo said the community was ready to obey and support the state government laws in order to put herders/farmers clashes to an end not only in the area but Ebonyi at large. 

Earlier, Mr Ogbuefi Zaccheaus, Member/Public Relations Officer, Local Government Advisory Committee commended the stakeholders for making the meeting a success and further advised the Cary the message of peace to the grassroots.

Zaccheaus, noted that the Committee established by Ebonyi House of Assembly Law 004 of 2015 has the responsibility of advising the Governor on the General Affairs of the Local Government Areas in the state.
