The Peoples Democratic Party in Cross River State has begun a regrouping drive, swearing in a new state chairman and opening its doors to members of the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party swore in Dr Francis Abang Bullem as its new state chairman on Friday, amid efforts to rebuild after a period of internal crisis and defections.

Bullem, in his acceptance address, pledged to unite the party and restore confidence among members, describing his emergence as coming at a critical period in the PDP's history.

He said his administration would prioritise reconciliation, partnership and inclusiveness across the party's structures.

"To those who supported another candidate, I extend a sincere hand of fellowship and partnership. We are one party and there is room for everyone," Bullem said.

He also pledged to lead with integrity, listen to members' concerns and build partnerships capable of strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

The PDP State Secretary, Joe Obi Bisong, explained that Bullem's emergence followed the resignation of the former state chairman, Alfred Asor, on October 16.

Bisong said the State Working Committee met and adopted a replacement in accordance with Article 47, Subsection 6 of the PDP constitution, which provides for filling vacancies within the party's leadership structure.

He said the new chairman was nominated from the same zone as his predecessor before the administration of the oath of office and allegiance.

The party's governorship candidate, Arthur Jarvis, said the swearing-in signalled a fresh start for the PDP and called on members to put aside their differences and work towards a common goal.

He said the party had experienced difficult times, including the departure of some leaders and members to the African Democratic Congress, but insisted that those who remained had kept the party alive.

Jarvis said the PDP was now in a stronger position and expressed confidence in its capacity to reclaim political control of the state.

He then opened the party to new entrants, particularly APC members willing to join its political movement to rescue Cross River.

"I have also said, when we come into office in 2027, it is going to be a party for Cross Riverians. I have also said that the windows of defection are open to our brothers in APC," Jarvis said.

"That window of defection is open to everybody. Let us take note that our party will soon launch the Rainbow Coalition," he added.

He said the Rainbow Coalition would provide a platform for political collaboration ahead of the 2027 elections.
