The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), South-East Zone C, has inaugurated a five-man Zonal Planning Committee for its proposed Media Summit, while calling on governors in the region to sustain their support for the Union and improve the welfare of journalists.
The resolutions were contained in a 13-point communiqué issued at the end of the Zone C Zonal Executive Council (ZEC) meeting held on Friday, November 6, 2026, at the Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi Hall, Press Centre, 4 Rangers Avenue, Industrial Layout, Enugu, Enugu State.
The meeting, chaired by the Zonal Vice President, Comrade Ezenwa Adiuku, JP, was attended by Chairmen and Secretaries of the five NUJ State Councils in the South-East.
According to the communiqué, the newly inaugurated five-man Zonal Planning Committee for the Media Summit is headed by Comrade Obinna Ogbuka as Chairman, with Comrades Ifeanyi Nwanguma and Emeka Odogwu as Co-Chairmen. Other members are Comrade Chinaza Peculiar Chukwunenye, who will serve as Secretary, and Comrade Ikechukwu Onuegbu as a member.
The Council called on South-East governors to continue supporting NUJ State Councils in their respective states, stressing the importance of institutional support in strengthening the journalism profession and promoting responsible media practice.
On the welfare and safety of journalists, the ZEC expressed concern over the working conditions of media practitioners across the region and urged governments, security agencies and media proprietors to ensure improved working environments, prompt payment of salaries and adequate protection for journalists in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
The Council also reaffirmed the commitment of journalists in the South-East to professionalism, objectivity and developmental journalism, urging practitioners to shun fake news, brown-envelope journalism and divisive reportage capable of undermining peace, unity and development in the region.
Addressing political developments in the South-East, the ZEC condemned attacks among political stakeholders from the region, irrespective of their political affiliations, and appealed to politicians to regard themselves as members of one family with different political platforms.
It urged political actors to prioritise the collective interest of the South-East and work towards strengthening unity, peace and regional development.
The Council equally congratulated members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) from the zone who emerged unopposed in the forthcoming Triennial Delegates' Conference scheduled to hold in Kano State.
It, however, charged NAWOJ chairpersons across the states to operate in harmony with the NUJ leadership in their respective states and ensure that the Union's leadership is carried along in their activities.
Similarly, the ZEC urged all State Councils to accord due recognition to National and Zonal leaders of the NUJ during their various official engagements and activities.
In its assessment of the activities of State Councils, the ZEC commended the Enugu State Government for providing a peaceful and conducive atmosphere for journalists to operate, describing the state as a media-friendly environment that allows for the free and unhindered practice of journalism.
The Council also praised the NUJ Enugu State Council for the successful organisation of its Press Week Grand Finale and the hosting of the Zonal Executive Council meeting, describing both events as colourful, well-coordinated and worthy of emulation by other State Councils.
The NUJ Abia State Council received commendation for its efforts towards completing its Secretariat project, while the Abia State Government was urged to provide the necessary assistance to enable the Council to complete the project for the benefit of journalists in the state.
The Anambra State Council was equally applauded for its Co-operative Society initiative and recognition of veterans of the journalism profession, which the ZEC described as commendable efforts towards enhancing members' welfare and preserving the heritage of the Union.
Furthermore, the Council appealed to South-East governors and other stakeholders to sustain their support for both the NUJ and NAWOJ in the region to enable the organisations to effectively discharge their responsibilities and contribute meaningfully to the growth of the media profession.
The communiqué was signed by the NUJ South-East Zonal Vice President, Comrade Ezenwa Adiuku, JP, and the Zonal Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Idam Irem, KSJI.
The communiqué drafting committee comprised Comrade Samson Nwafor, Chairman of NUJ Ebonyi State Council; Comrade Sulaiman Onyeama Jr., Secretary of NUJ Enugu State Council; and Comrade Uzoamaka Agbo, NAWOJ Zonal Vice Chairperson.
