...calls for ethical journalism, warns against spread of misinformation and fake news
The Special Assistant to the Governor of Ebonyi State on Media, Ebere Ania Ada Olaedo, has pledged financial support for the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Ebonyi State Chapter, in recognition of the association’s contributions to journalism and professional development.
Ania made the pledge while addressing members of the association at its annual summit held at the Dr. Sam Egwu Press Centre, along the Enugu–Abakaliki Expressway, Ebonyi State.
The media aide, who did not disclose the amount pledged, commended the leadership of NAWOJ in Ebonyi State for what she described as its remarkable achievements and commitment to the growth of the association.
She expressed confidence in the association’s ability to promote professionalism and strengthen the participation of women in the media industry.
Ania, who conveyed the goodwill of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru to the participants, described the summit’s theme, “Countering Misinformation and Fake News: The Role of Women Journalists,” as timely and relevant in view of the rapid spread of unverified information in contemporary society.
According to her, women journalists have a critical responsibility to uphold the truth, correct misleading narratives and ensure that the public receives accurate and credible information.
She noted that the summit provided an important platform for media practitioners to reflect on professional standards and develop strategies for promoting ethical journalism in Ebonyi State and Nigeria at large.
Despite her tight schedule, Ania said she was delighted to attend the gathering because of her belief in the ideals and objectives of NAWOJ.
She reaffirmed her support for the association and encouraged its leadership to sustain its commitment to professional excellence, responsible journalism and the advancement of women in the media profession.
The annual summit brought together women journalists to deliberate on the challenges posed by misinformation and fake news and the role of professional journalism in promoting truth, accountability and public trust.
Ania’s pledge of support is expected to contribute to the association’s activities and efforts to strengthen the capacity of women journalists in Ebonyi State.
