The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, Comrade Nwafor Samson, has commended Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for what he described as massive investment in all sectors, particularly in education, human capital development and infrastructure.
Nwafor spoke on Monday after leading journalists on an inspection of major government projects across the state as part of activities to mark the 2026 NUJ Press Week, themed, “2027: The Ballot, The Truth and The Future.”
The projects inspected included the Ebonyi State ICT University, Oferekpe Agbaja/Nwofe Agbaja Flyover, the remodeled Trade Fair Centre now known as Ebonyi International Hotel, Industrial Clusters Izhiamgbo, Vanco Flyover and Underground Tunnel, as well as many road projects within and outside Abakaliki metropolis.
Speaking at the ICT University, Comrade Nwafor said the magnitude of infrastructure at the institution was evidence of the administration’s commitment to education, technology and innovation, noting that the project could become a major centre of research and technological development in Nigeria and Africa.
“One will think that maybe he is completing the project started by his predecessor, not knowing that just within three years plus, this massive project was put on ground and academic section has already commenced,” he said.
The NUJ chairman expressed optimism that the ICT university would, within the next 10 to 15 years, become a major attraction for technology and innovation, adding that its development could contribute significantly to the transformation of Ebonyi and Nigeria.
He also commended the quality of infrastructure at the university’s staff quarters, describing the facilities as impressive and urging journalists to report on the projects based on what they had personally observed.
Nwafor said the inspection was part of Journalists' responsibility to provide the public with factual information and hold government accountable, stressing that journalists should not rely solely on unverified claims and false information circulating on social media.
“We have gone round and I can say without mincing words that the state government under the leadership of Governor Francis Nwifuru has done so much, especially in education, human capital development and infrastructure,” he said.
He, however, urged contractors and engineers handling government projects to maintain professional standards and ensure that public projects were executed in the interest of the people and at a record time, while charging journalists to sustain balanced, factual and constructive reportage.
