The Special Assistant to the Governor on Interparty Affairs, Hon. Sunday Nwambam, made the clarification during a press briefing in Abakaliki, describing the allegations as “false, misleading and baseless.”
Nwambam was reacting to a recent briefing by Prince Darlington Onwe, who reportedly spoke on behalf of the PDP in the state and alleged a plan to frame, harass and criminalise members of the opposition party.
He questioned the faction of the PDP represented by Onwe, describing the party as fragmented and accusing its leadership of engaging in what he called “infantile politics.”
According to him, the allegation that the state government was planning to frame PDP members over alleged PVC-related activities was unfounded.
“Let me categorically clarify that the allegation of plotting to frame up, arrest and detain some members of PDP over alleged dealing in Permanent Voters’ Cards or for any other reasons is false, misleading and baseless,” he said.
The governor’s aide maintained that the Nwifuru administration remained committed to the principles of multiparty democracy and would continue to provide an enabling environment for political parties to operate in the state.
He said the constitutional recognition of a multiparty system was essential to allowing Nigerians to pursue their political aspirations through different political platforms.
Nwambam further argued that Governor Nwifuru was not opposed to Ebonyi residents supporting candidates of their choice, stressing that the administration’s focus remained on governance and development.
“The Governor is not averse to the people supporting candidates of their choice,” he said, adding that the people of Ebonyi State would ultimately make their political choices based on their assessment of the administration.
He challenged the PDP faction to provide evidence to substantiate its allegations, rather than making claims about actions allegedly being planned by security agencies.
Nwambam also urged the police and other relevant security agencies to investigate the allegations raised by the PDP and establish their veracity.
He advised political actors against making unsubstantiated claims capable of creating tension in the state, saying such allegations could unnecessarily heat up the polity.
The governor’s aide also urged registered voters in Ebonyi State to safeguard their Permanent Voters’ Cards, describing the electoral document as a valuable instrument of democratic participation.
He warned voters against surrendering or selling their PVCs and encouraged them to protect the documents ahead of future elections.
