The member representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. (Comrade) Chinedu Ogah, has dismissed claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the constituency, Mr. Kelvin Chukwu, that he has no right to seek a third term in office.
Ogah, who spoke while reacting to an online publication attributed to Chukwu, said membership of the National Assembly was governed by the Constitution and not by an arbitrary two-term limit.
He also highlighted some of his projects and interventions in his constituency, particularly in Chukwu’s ward, challenging the NDC candidate to present his manifesto and allow the electorate to decide who they want to represent them.
According to Ogah, “National Assembly is a constitutional matter. There is no constitutional provision that says a member of the House of Representatives cannot seek a third term.”
The lawmaker said he had attracted projects and interventions to different communities in the constituency, including bridges, solar streetlights and a 500KVA transformer, among others.
He further claimed that despite Chukwu’s political activities in the area, he had defeated him in his polling unit during previous elections.
“I won the election in 2019 when I was in the opposition, and I also won in his polling unit. In 2023, he was in another political party, yet I won in his polling unit,” Ogah said.
Ogah described his decision to seek another term as a matter for the electorate to determine, insisting that he was not opposed to other candidates contesting the election.
“I am not against anybody contesting. Let everybody present himself before the masses and let the masses vote,” he said.
He also urged Chukwu to unveil his manifesto and campaign before the electorate, rather than focusing on his decision to seek another term.
The lawmaker expressed confidence in his chances at the polls, saying his record of representation and previous electoral victories would speak for him.
The NDC candidate, Chukwu, had reportedly questioned Ogah’s bid for a third term and alleged that the constituency had not benefited sufficiently from his representation.
Ogah, however, rejected the claim and maintained that the electorate would ultimately decide whether he deserves another term in the House of Representatives.
Hon. Ogah further said that about 15 persons from Kelvin Chukwu’s village had secured federal appointments (jobs) through his interventions as a member of the House of Representatives.
He added that the NDC candidate had also benefited financially from him as a federal lawmaker.
Ogah urged the electorate to exercise their franchise by using their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to vote for candidates of their choice, rather than being influenced by what he described as misinformation from his political opponent.
He said voters should assess the records and contributions of the various candidates before making their decision at the polls.
The lawmaker also accused Chukwu of attempting to exploit his Hausa-speaking ability to solicit money from people under the guise of contesting the election, while expressing confidence that he could not defeat him at the polls.
Ogah said: “Let the masses vote. The electorate know who they trust. I have confidence in my people and I know the result will speak for itself.”
