The Ebonyi State Government said it has arrested Over 200 Persons who violated the state wide environmental sanitation order last Saturday , the 25 July.
Commissioner for Environment,Sylvester Nwenugu- Nwite told Journalists at the state high court complex immediately after the cleanup exercise which expanded from 7am to 10am.
Nwenugu Nwite who was overwhelmed by the level of compliance by the residents of the state appreciated the state Governor, Francis Nwifuru for providing the enabling environment for his ministry to thrive.
He noted, the exercise has been a monthly ritual which gives the residents the opportunity to cleanup their surroundings once in every month adding his ministry would do everything within her powers to ensure the state capital regains it's past glory in the environmental cleaness.
He informed that the ministry would embark on closing of some refuse dumps that are currently posing danger on the health of the residents.
He expressed gratitude to stakeholders and individuals, who went round the town with him explaining that his team met people who complied while in some areas people did not comply.
In their separate remarks, the Commissioner for Transportation Prince Emeka Igboke, the senior special Assistant (SSA) to governor on Environment Mr. Okechukwu Nwokoro and permanent Secretary Ministry of Environment.
" Even in heaven there was war, so on earth we expect such. You can see the number of persons who disobeyed and we arrested them including the motorists and the travelers. I tell you that above two hundred persons have been arrested and they are currently facing trials in our mobile court"
"I advise citizens to keep their environment clean . There are two cleaness: environmental cleaness and personal cleaness. You can't go to the market and buy costly shoes and clothes and your environment will be dirty, you will be like a pig"
He urged residents to own up their refuse and stop disposiing them indiscriminately.
