The Ebonyi State Civil Service Commission has raised the bar for professionalism in the state public service, directing administrative officers / other Cadres seeking career conversion to demonstrate sound knowledge of the Civil Service Rules, Scheme of Service and the responsibilities attached to their respective professions.
Chairman of the Commission, Lady Virginia Okemini Oketa, gave the directive while addressing administrative officers and other staff from ministries, departments and agencies appearing before the Commission for career conversion.
She described administrative officers as the engine room of government, stressing that their conduct, competence and professionalism directly reflect the image and credibility of the public service.
Lady Oketa urged the officers to familiarise themselves with the Civil Service Rules and Scheme of Service to enable them discharge their responsibilities effectively and uphold the standards expected of public servants.
She also advised the officers to carefully proofread official documents, reports and correspondence, and to brief Staff due for conversions and promotions properly before dispatching them, noting that accuracy and attention to detail remain essential qualities of an efficient civil servant.
The Commission Chairman observed that the era of obtaining academic qualifications without possessing the knowledge and competence to defend them had passed, emphasising that continuous learning and self-improvement are indispensable in today's evolving public service.
She further directed officers who acquired additional academic qualifications to present evidence of approved study leave, alongside other relevant documents required for the conversion exercise.
Lady Oketa also encouraged applicants to acquire a thorough understanding of their professional disciplines, stressing that competence remains a key requirement for career advancement in the civil service.
Speaking during the exercise, Chairman of the Conversion Committee, Hon. Pastor Vincent Awoke, said applicants would be expected to demonstrate adequate knowledge of their chosen professions.
According to him, each candidate must correctly answer professional questions and general questions before being considered successful in the conversion exercise.
He explained that the assessment was designed to ensure that only qualified and competent officers are converted into specialised cadres, in line with the Commission's commitment to strengthening efficiency, professionalism and service delivery across the Ebonyi State Civil Service.
