According to the renowned South African statesman, Nelson Mandela, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." This timeless assertion reflects the conviction of Rt. Hon. Moses Ije Odunwa, whose commitment to education has continued to transform lives, expand opportunities, and lay a solid foundation for sustainable development in Ikwo South Constituency and Ebonyi State at large.
As a retired teacher, Rt. Hon. Moses Ije Odunwa has consistently demonstrated that education remains the foundation of sustainable development. His passion for learning, human capital development, and educational excellence has translated into impactful constituency projects and far-reaching legislative interventions aimed at strengthening the education sector in Ebonyi State.
At the constituency level, he has sponsored the education of numerous indigent students by paying school fees for pupils, SSCE candidates, and students in tertiary institutions. Many Law and Medical students have benefitted from his educational support, helping them pursue their academic dreams without financial hindrance.
He also attracted the construction of the largest classroom block at Community Primary School (CPS), Ndiegu Amagu, thereby improving the learning environment and expanding access to quality basic education in the area.
In another remarkable intervention, Rt. Hon. Odunwa paid the tuition and bench fees of 500-level Medical students of Ebonyi State University. This outstanding gesture earned him commendation from the National Association of Ikwo Students (NAIS), which described the intervention as a significant investment in the future of education and youth development in Ikwo Local Government Area.
As Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Odunwa has also presided over the passage of landmark education-related bills that have strengthened the educational system in Ebonyi State. These include the establishment of the Ebonyi State Senior Secondary Education Board; the law repealing the Ebonyi State College of Education Amendment Law No. 008 of 2010 and re-enacting the Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo, as a degree-awarding institution; the law renaming the School of Health Sciences and Technology, Ngbo, as the Ebonyi State College of Health Sciences and Technology, Ngbo; the repeal and re-enactment of the Ebonyi State University of Aeronautics and Aerospace Engineering Law; and the establishment of the Ebonyi State Education Development Trust Fund to provide sustainable funding for educational development.
Furthermore, under his leadership, the House adopted a motion converting ten State Model Junior Secondary Schools across the three senatorial zones into full-fledged Model Secondary Schools to enable students complete their secondary education and qualify to sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The affected schools include Umunaga, Abarigwe, Umuogudu Oshia, Ekeaja, Okpuitumo, Oferekpe-Agbaja, Echara, Amaizu/Amangbala, Onunwafor (Ezzama), Isiuzo Okposi, and Isu Achara Model Secondary Schools.
The House also screened and confirmed the appointments of the Chairman and Members of the Ebonyi State Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) and the Chairman and Members of the Ebonyi State Secondary Education Board, thereby strengthening the governance and administration of the education sector.
Through these legislative achievements and personal interventions, Rt. Hon. Moses Ije Odunwa has continued to demonstrate commitment to expanding educational opportunities, improving learning infrastructure, enhancing institutional capacity, and investing in the future of Ebonyi State through quality education.
Indeed, a representative who not only makes laws that strengthen the education sector but also makes personal sacrifices to ensure that children and youths have access to quality education has proven his commitment to the development of his people. Such exemplary leadership deserves commendation, sustained support, and the opportunity to continue representing the good people of Ikwo South Constituency, so that this remarkable legacy of educational advancement can be consolidated for generations to come.
