Cricket made a return to secondary school sports in Ebonyi State on Thursday as no fewer than 150 students of Knight of Saint John Technical College, Agba, participated in a historic training session marking the formal reintroduction of the game in the school.
The programme was organised by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ebonyi State chapter, in collaboration with the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), as part of efforts to promote cricket at the grassroots and expand the sport across secondary schools in the state.
The event, held on March 12, 2026, at the school sports field, also formed part of activities lined up for the 2026 zonal cricket competition being organised by SWAN in partnership with the federation.
About 150 male students took part in the maiden training session supervised by officials of the federation, with the Games Master, Vice Principal of the school, representatives of the state cricket association and sports administrators in attendance.
Speaking during the exercise, the Chairman of SWAN in Ebonyi State, Comrade Nwogha Ndubuisi, commended the school management for providing a conducive environment for the development of cricket.
Ndubuisi, who was represented by the Vice Chairman, Mrs Blessing Igidi, said the introduction of cricket would help instill discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship among the students.
Also speaking, an official of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Jeffta Ugwu, who supervised the training session, urged the students to take the sport seriously, noting that cricket offers opportunities for both national and international exposure.
He said the federation remained committed to developing cricket at the grassroots level through regular training, competitions and talent discovery programmes in schools.
Officials at the event noted that the initiative was part of ongoing efforts to discover young talents who could represent Ebonyi State and Nigeria in future local and international competitions.
