RHIESS Empowers 250 Elderly Women in Ebonyi

No fewer than 250 elderly people has benefited in the 3rd phase of 50million naira Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS) in Ebonyi State. Each beneficiary went home with two hundred thousand naira (#200,000) and 25kg bag of rice.

The empowerment programme held at the Banquet Hall of the Old Government House, Abakaliki, the State capital.

The first lady represented by the wife of the Governor of Ebonyi State Chief (Mrs) Mary Maudline Uzoamaka Nwifuru said the gesture was carried out under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

The wife of the president disclosed that a total of 9,500 selected beneficiaries across the federation would benefit from the scheme, with each receiving ₦200,000, amounting to ₦1.9 billion approved by the governing board of the Renewed Hope Initiative.

According to her, each of the 36 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is allocated ₦50 million for the programme.

“Since the inception of this administration in 2023, the Renewed Hope Initiative has made it a tradition to celebrate our senior citizens every December in recognition of their invaluable contributions to nation building,” she said.

She explained that the scheme targeted 250 vulnerable and elderly citizens from the age of 65 and above in each state, describing the initiative as a way of expressing gratitude to senior citizens who laboured to build the nation.

“As we approach the festive season, it is important to prioritize our elderly citizens. They have walked difficult paths so that the younger generation may have smoother roads to travel,” she added.

She stressed that it was both a moral duty and a source of joy to ensure senior citizens live their later years in comfort, good health and dignity, urging beneficiaries to find joy, purpose and fulfillment in old age through community, compassion and care.

The wife of the Ebonyi State Governor Chief Mrs Mary Maudline Nwifuru who spoke through BERWO team lead Professor Nkechi Echiegu appreciated President Tinubu’s wife for always providing succor to the people of State, noting that the beneficiaries were selected across the thirteen local government areas of the State while urging them to make judicious use of the money.

In their separate good will messages, the State commissioner for women affairs and social development Barr. Felicia Nwamkpuma, the member representing Ebonyi North East in Ebonyi State House of Assembly Hon. Chinyere Nwogbaga, Chinyere Elom, Adeline Idike, Emerald Akaji among others thanked the wife of the president for her uncommon love and care to Ebonyi women.

They also praised Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru and his dear wife for building three bedroom bulgalows to indigent widows in the State, saying that Ebonyi women would reward them come 2027 general elections.
