Ebonyi Govt Moves To Establish State Education Development Trust Fund

The Ebonyi State Government has concluded plans for the establishment of Education Development Trust Fund which is  aimed at strengthening and boosting Education standard in the state.

This was announced this Friday, by the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Barr. Ikeuwa Omebeh during a press briefing on the outcome of the state Executive council meeting held on Thursday, 4th September, 2025 at the New Government House EXCO Chambers Abakaliki, presided over by Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.

According to the Commissioner, "EXCO approved the forwarding of an Executive Bill to the State House of Assembly for the establishment of the Ebonyi State Education Development Trust Fund, with the intention of  mobilizing public and private resources to strengthen basic education across the state".

The Commissioner further revealed that the fund which will be managed by a legally constituted board to ensure transparency and accountability, is expected to support classroom rehabilitation, ICT integration, teachers’ training, scholarship schemes, school feeding, and security measures in public schools across the state.

He also disclosed that the Council has also granted a special waiver for the absorption of 33 staff of King David Gifted Academy, comprising 25 teaching and 8 non-teaching staff into the State Secondary Education Board.

Hon. Barr. Omebeh also disclosed the resolutions of EXCO which bothers on how to ensure efficiency in the state internally generated revenue service, by considering the report of its investigative committee on petitions against the Chairman and the Secretary of the State Internal Revenue Service, noting that the Council adopted the committee’s recommendations, which include a restructuring of the service, forensic investigation of its automation system, strict monitoring of its operations, and warning to staff against fraudulent practices.

He further explained that EXCO also issued directive that all contracts must go through due process and transparent bidding, while only legal practitioners with proper authorization should prosecute IGR-related cases in the courts of law.

On the area of youths and sports, the Honourable Commissioner said that the EXCO has given approval for the State Council for Public Procurement to advertise the award of contracts for the development of the Pool Service Building and Swimming Pool at the Ebonyi State Olympic Sports Centre.

He also disclosed the resolution of EXCO that henceforth, all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) must duly inform the Ministry of Project Monitoring and Evaluation of every project under their purview, to ensure effective supervision and accountability.

The information Commissioner also noted that in a order to regulate the activities of scrap dealers in the state, Council approved the drafting and forwarding of an Executive Bill to the House of Assembly to initiate punitive measures to curb excesses and ensure proper regulation of the trade.

In the area of transportation, Barr. Omebeh told the press that EXCO has summoned the General Manager of Ebonyi Transport Corporation (EBOTRANS), Chief Mrs. Nnenna Igwe, along with the immediate past Acting General Manager and suspended Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Dr. Simon Idenyi to submit a comprehensive account of the corporation’s activities for deliberation at the next EXCO meeting.

The information Commissioner while fielding questions from journalists, further reaffirmed that the resolutions reflect Governor Nwifuru’s commitment to advancing education, strengthening institutions, and fostering sustainable development across Ebonyi State.
