In today's rapidly evolving world, the need for youth empowerment through vocational training has become more crucial than ever. Traditional education systems, while important, are no longer sufficient on their own to prepare young people for the demands of the modern workforce. Vocational skills, particularly in areas such as Information and Communication Technology (ICT), building, and production, offer practical, hands-on knowledge that equips youth with employable skills, entrepreneurial potential, and a pathway to sustainable development.
The Ebonyi State Government led by His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has ‘promotion of vocational and technical education’, as one key factor necessary for achieving needed results in revamping the education sector in Ebonyi State. The Governor has continued to note that one of the most pressing challenges in many economies is the mismatch between the skills taught in schools and those required in the job market. For him, vocational and technical trainings help bridge this gap by focusing on practical competencies.
These impactful ideologies can only yield results when implemented correctly. To achieve this, the Governor has repeatedly partnered with professional bodies to deliver these trainings through the State Ministry of Skill Development and Job Creation. For instance, the Government of Ebonyi State, in collaboration with NASENI, trained 100 youths on modern electrical installation techniques in November 2024 and provided them with necessary tools. Furthermore, the State Ministry teamed up with BERWO in August 2024 to skill Ebonyi youths in fashion design, hairdressing, barbing, shoemaking, and almaco glass construction. Same was achieved with the Agribusiness trainings in Enugu, ensuring they can effectively utilize their skills.
The State Ministry for Skill Development and Job Creation will launch another 3-month intensive vocational training program for 100 Ebonyi youths in four days’ time, focusing on ICT, Construction, Building, and Production skills. The program encompasses basic training in data analysis, video editing, graphics design, photography, solar and CCTV installation, interior decoration, cream production, candle making, wood cladding, paint production, wig revamping, and entrepreneurship. Upon completion, the youths will receive empowerment support. This initiative demonstrates the Governor's steadfast commitment to equipping Ebonyi youths with essential skills that align with market demands.
Accordingly, Governor Francis Nwifuru has initiated these measures and more, to tackle youth unemployment, promote entrepreneurship and innovation, drive technological and industrial growth, and foster lifelong learning and adaptability, all aimed at boosting Ebonyi State's overall economic growth. These initiatives align with the The People's Charter of Needs mantra, which the Governor has consistently implemented point by point.
