Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, Ebonyi State Council has raised concerned over the activities of revenue agents in the state. In a communique reached at the end of emergency Congress held on Friday, 27th June, 2025 at the NUJ press center, Abakaliki, condemned the harassment of revenue agents and taskforce on innocent residents of the state.
The Congress, which was well attended and presided over by the Chairman, Comrade Samson Nwafor, deliberated extensively on some critical issues affecting the Union and the State, and reached the following resolutions:
"Congress commended members for full participation in the NUJ 70th anniversary celebration, organized at both state and national levels.
"Congress ratified the decision by the State Executive Council (SEC) for the leadership of each Chapel to ensure that all members pay Check off dues as and when due, insisting that anyone who does not pay check off dues stands to lose rights and privileges accruable to members of the Union.
"The Congress reiterates that every Journalist practicing in the state should register with the Union through a Chapel, from where such registration will be forwarded to the Council for ratification. Congress notes that this is one of the procedures any Journalist must meet to be a member of the Union in line with the constitution.
"Congress directed Chapels without legitimate leadership or whose tenures of leadership have expired to immediately commence the process of electing legitimate leadership of their various Chapels.
"Congress congratulates Governor Francis Nwifuru on his two years anniversary. And notes that the Governor's administration has been impactful and wishes him well in all his efforts towards giving the state good governance.
"The Congress also congratulates Members of the National Assembly from Ebony State as well as the Members of Ebonyi State House of Assembly on their two years in office, and commended their individual and collective efforts towards nation building. Congress urges them to commit more to making laws that would tackle the myriad of challenges confronting our state and the nation.
"Congress specially Commended Hon. Nkemkanma Kama, Member representing OHANIVO Federal Constituency, for fulfilling his promise of sinking a borehole at the NUJ Press Centre, Abakaliki.
"Congress also Commends the State Government for the ongoing repair of damaged pipes within the capital city, in its efforts to provide portable water to the citizens; for easing traffic within the capital city by opening Udensi Roundabout, which was usually blocked at night; and for initiating an executive bill to regulate house rent in the State. Congress, therefore, calls on the State House of Assembly to expedite action on the bill.
"Congress noted with serious concern the activities of revenue agents and task force operating in the state, who go about harassing the residents and therefore, called on the State Government to take drastic measures towards harmonizing their operations. This, Congress believes will help to fish out fake ones among them, as their actions are bringing bad name to the state government.
"Congress specifically condemned the activities of taskforce in charge of enforcing traffic rules within the capital City, whose modus operandi has resulted in many road crashes and deaths, and calls on the State government to closely checkmate their activities and possibly embark on training for them or disband them in order to end their uncouth activities.
"Congress appreciated the magnitude of construction ongoing at Vanco flyover/tunnel and advises Ebonyi State Government to ensure total closure of the site from the public, especially now that earthmoving machines are seriously working there. This is to prevent injury or death that might occur from possible accident in the area.
"Congress calls on Governor Francis Nwifuru to wade into extortion of landlords by the leadership of their host communities, especially in Izzi Land, who often come up with multiple levies unknown to law for land already paid for.
"Congress condemned in strongest terms the outrageous Electricity bills given to Ebonyi Residents by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) for its Postpaid metered customers, and calls on the State Government to establish its own Electricity Regulatory Commission, to check the operations of EEDC in the State.
"Congress noted with serious worry over the rising level of poverty in the Country and calls on government at all levels to embark on aggressive skill acquisition programmes and other forms of empowerment programmes to cushion the effect of the scourge. Such interventions must be guided against racketeers who often hijack them against the reach of the supposed beneficiaries."
