The Senate Deputy Chief Whip wearing the golden crown of Ebonyi North Senatorial district, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi has advocated for improved welfare packages for Judges and other judiciary workers in Nigeria in order to enhance their productivity, adding that the judiciary is the most dignified institution in the whole world.
Senator Nwebonyi made the declaration during an oversight visit of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to the Federal High Court Headquarters, Abuja on Tuesday.
The astute parliamentarian who is also a Senior lawyer and member of the Committee noted that the Judiciary is a dignified institution vested with the sole responsibility of protecting the rights of citizens and administration of justice.
The Federal lawmaker assured the readiness of the 10th Nigerian Senate under the leadership of His Excellency, Senator Godswill Akpabio who is also a Senior lawyer to make necessary legislations that would improve the welfare of the Judges. He further called on the Government to prioritize the welfare of judges by providing them with official vehicles, residences, allowances and other logistics to enable them discharge their duties creditably without fear or favour, affection or ill-will and with malice towards none.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno said that they were in the Federal High Court headquarters, Abuja as part of their oversight functions to agregate the concerns of the hallowed temple of justice and monitor its progress in the dispensation of justice. He assured that the 10th Senate is determined to make effective legislations that would reposition the Nigerian judiciary as the last hope of the common man.
Responding, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Abuja- Hon. Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf appreciated the Senate Committee on Judiciary led by Senator Monguno for their avowed commitment towards strengthening the Judiciary through timely appropriations and robust legislations. He equally thanked the Senate Deputy Chief Whip -Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi for his insightful contributions and pledged the continuous synergy between the Judiciary and the Legislature.
The Committee later proceeded to the National Industrial Court headquarters, Abuja for the same oversight functions where they interfaced with the leadership of the Court on the modalities for improving their welfare and enhancing its productivity.
