Workers Day: Gov Nwifuru Announces Additional Increment In Workers Salary

Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru of Ebonyi state has again announced an additional N10,000 to the salary of the state workers to cushion the effect of the harsh economic reality in the state.


Governor Nwifuru who made the pronouncement during the 2024 workers day celebration held at Pa Oruta Ngele Stadium in Abakaliki, the state capital, noted that the increment takes effect from this month and will run until the federal government and Labour Union come up with an agreeable minimum wage for the country, which the governor said his administration will implement when it comes up.

Nwifuru emphasised that civil servants have remained partners in progress, reiterating that his administration will continue to sustain and deepen the existing friendly working environment and industrial harmony, aimed at increasing productivity of workforce in particular and improving good governance.


The additional N10,000 will make it N20,000 increase that Ebonyi workers are getting in less than one year of the Nwifuru-led administration.


On his part, the state Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Professor Egwu Ogugua, highlighted some of the challenges of workers in the state and urged the state government to engage more teachers in public primary and secondary schools.

He pleaded the state Governor to recall some of the Ebonyi State university staff who have been suspended for over two years due to their active involvement in union activities that will ensure better university management outcomes.

The chairmen as well pleaded the state government for the increasement of the welfare package of the workers in Ebonyi state, attributed it to economic  handship, urges the state governor to consider the demand of Ebonyi workers .

They pleaded the state governor, Nwifuru to consider additional implementation of minimum wage of 20,000 to coution the negative effect economic handship that is ravanging the country .

The union chairmen, however, requested the reabsorbing staff of the former teaching hospital into new EBSUTH, adding that those staff were dropped without any tangible reason during the merger exercise with the Federal Government hospital .

“Please consider recalling some of staff of Ebonyi state university (EBSU) who have been suspended for over two years due to their active involvement in union activities that will ensure better University Management outcomes.”
