SWAN hails Umahi, pledges to promote sporting activities in Ebonyi

 


The Sports writers association of Nigeria (SWAN) Ebonyi state chapter has hailed Governor David Umahi for revolutionising sports in the state through policies and programmes that enhance the sector.


The commendation was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of its meeting at the Pa Ngele Oruta stadium, Abakaliki after its meeting where members toured venues of various sporting events going on in the state finals of the David Umahi annual school sports competition.


The communiqué was signed by Comrades Nnamdi Akpa, the Secretary of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Ebonyi state council, Edward Nnachi, SWAN state Chairman , Emeka Opara, Immediate Past SWAN state Chairman and James Nwakpa, the SWAN Assistant Secretary in the state.


The association in the communiqué, pledged to collaborate with the state government in developing sports through undiluted reportage of various sporting policies and programmes.


“SWAN Ebonyi chapter foremostly thank God for his grace and protection on all athletes, officials, school authorities, media and all those involved in the on-going epoch making school sports competition.


“The association commends the indefatigable Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief, Engr, Dr. David Umahi for his presence at the events of the competition right from its Local Government elimination series.


“The governor has amply shown his desire to revive sports in the state and use the sector as an avenue to make youths harness their talents, be positively empowered and shun crime,” the communiqué read.


According to the communiqué, the association commended the tenacity of the ebullient Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports in the State, Hon, Charlse Akpuenika whose ministry in collaboration with state Ministry of Education and the Office of the SSA to the Governor Investment, has ensured a hitch-free competition.


“We pledge our unflinching loyalty to the National President of the NUJ, Chief, Comrade Chris Isiguzo for his poignant dexterity in managing the affairs of the union which has impacted positively in the well being of journalists in the country.


“We pledge our unrelenting support to the state council of the NUJ ably led and anchored by Comrade Tony Niwizi for ensuring that journalists in Ebonyi are protected and given a sense of belonging in the state.


“We also reaffirm our confidence in the leadership of the state Chairman of the association, Comrade Edward Nnachi in his efforts to unite members,” the communiqué read.


The association in the communiqué, however urged the NUJ to seriously caution the nefarious and demeaning activities of some journalists in the state who impersonate the name of SWAN as a factional group and have continued to be clogs in the wheel of its progress.


“We urge Ebonyi people and Nigerians to eschew bitterness and violence and embrace peace so that we can build a state and nation that the future generation would be proud of and desire to identify with,” the communiqué read.
