If we're illiterates, Entire state, our constituents not literate - EBHA Lawmakers tell Nwebonyi

Ebonyi Assembly Speaker, Chief Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.

The Honourable
members of Ebonyi State House of Assembly in their reactions to the State Commissioner for the Capital City Development, Barr Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi said that if they are illiterates as claimed by the Commissioner, it implies that the entire state and their respective constituents are equally not literate, Leo Ekene Oketa writes this Wednesday from Abakaliki.

One would ordinarily expect a boiling Tuesday plenary, yesterday, in the aftermath of the reactions from the Commissioner for Capital City Development - Barr. Onyekachi Nwebonyi, on his invitation to the House, referring to the entire distinguished members of Ebonyi State House of Assembly via social media platforms, as illiterates.

Indeed, the Legislative Session lived up to its billing.

You may wish to recall that at Friday Plenary, June 18, 2021, the Honourable Speaker - Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, constituted a five-man ad-hoc committee to investigate various allegations bothering on flagrant abuse of office, wanton destruction of properties and unwholesome molestation of Ebonyians, by Barr. Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi. Part of the terms of reference given to the committee was as well, to invite the said Commissioner for interfacing.

However, Commissioner Nwebonyi in absolute disregard for the Legislative Arm of Ebonyi State Government, went rampage on various social media platforms, insulting the Chief Lawmaker of the State, the entire Lawmakers and the Law Making Institution of the State - referring to them, amongst other signature vituperations, as ‘bunch of illiterates’.

Convening at the floor of the House on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, the Honourable Members went rightly livid at the crass disrespect and insult that was sent their way by Barr. Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi.

It was the Deputy Speaker - Rt. Hon. Chief Odefa Obasi Odefa, who began the outburst by noting how Nwebonyi’s disrespectful comments extend to their constituents whom they represent, and by extension, the entire Ebonyi State. He vehemently rejected the apology letter written by Barr. Nwebonyi and called on his colleagues to do so.

Earlier during the plenary, the Honourable Speaker - Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru read on the floor of the House, a supposed apology letter from Barr. Nwebonyi to Mr. Speaker and the entire Members, one which the Deputy Leader of the House - Hon. Kingsley Ogbonna Ikoro, and other Members found watery and fraudulent in intent.

The Leader of the House, Hon. Victor Uzoma Chukwu was visibly outraged in his contributions and requested that Barr. Onyekachi Nwebonyi be directed through a resolution of the House, to forthwith, end all forms of activities in the ministry as regards Ebonyians, pending when his roles are streamlined.

Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru commended the passion and disposition of all the Members in the issue and urged them to exercise some patience while the committee rounds up its work and submits their findings and recommendations to the House. He assured them that the Law will take its proper course in the issue.

Additionally, the House screened and confirmed for positions of Commissioner-Designates in the State; Hon. Mrs. Ann Aligwe, Princess Mrs Chinwe Deborah Okah, Hon. Emmanuel Uguru, Chief Ogodoali Nomeh, Pst. Eze Nwachukwu Eze, Chief Ukie Ezeali and Hon. Charles Emeka Akpuenika. Others for the position of coordinators and liaison officers were screened and confirmed as well.
Leo Ekene Oketa, the Chief Press Secretary to the Honourable Speaker, wrote from Abakaliki, Ebonyi State Capital.
