The Commissioner for Education in Ebonyi State, Dr Onyebuchi Chima has called individuals especially the young persons to shun any activity capable of causing security threats by obeying government policies and programmes in the state.

He made this call on Thursday while interacting with newsmen in his office at Centenary City Abakalki.

Dr. Chima said that the state government has launched operation shoot your football instead of shooting gun as a way of fighting security challenges in the state.

He said, Governor David Umahi on flagging off school sports competition in the state, encouraged people to promote peace and unity among themselves and the programme has reduced security challenges to the barest minimal in the state.

Chima congratulated all the children around the globe, noting that the celebration of children's day today being 27th May was in low key as a result of COVID-19's negative influences and however assured his office's commitment to ensure quality education in the state.

He encouraged school children and other students in various institutions of learning to take the sports activities in the state serious to harness their talents and meet up with opportunities waiting for them after their graduation.

"The sporting activities have bridged the fears, we have changed the narration of shooting the gun to shooting the football, instead of shooting gun, we shoot ball, we kick the ball and engage on meaningful skills in Ebonyi State.

"And that is why am very excited with our Governor who is always on top of the games to make the state the best. If you watch the type of governance in the state, we in education is classified as Umahism. He has the knowledge of solving the leadership challenges. In Ebonyi, we have changed the narratives in the education ministry, the children are very excited because of innovations brought by our Governor, His Execllency Engr. Chief David Nweze Umahi," he said.

Further, the Education Commissioner said Ebonyi government will continue to promote digital learning, and enjoined parents to allow their wards to key into all the programmes of his ministry for the school children in the state especially the ongoing school sports competitions meant for those in primary and secondary schools.

The sports programme which the Commissioner said, the school children in the state will be engaged in inter-house sports, have both local government and zonal competitions.

"Today, we will be ending the zonal competitions, His Excellency is quite interested in it. Yesterday he was at the central, we celebrate the children's day today with the final competitions of the zonal competitions of the school sports."

He explained: "Sporting activity is not just a purpose of doing exercise in the school but it's also a career part. So we are training the children wholistically and in other words, to be providing them opportunities for them to improve their skills.

"So, some maybe good in sports and it doesn't mean that you won't be attending lessons to improve your studies. Sam Okwara Oji was a lawyer and also he was a good footballer, coach is also a good job, you can't get opportunity in FIFA or Olympic if you have no skills in sports. So, it's high time we begin to think when our children will be in FIFA, the Olympic or other Africa leagues," he said.
