EU-UN spotlight, others take gender violence campaign to market

 




The Ebonyi State Government with support of European Union and United Nations (EU-UN) Spotlight lnitiative have said that proper treatment, education and gender justice of women and girls would bring great development of a society. 




The Director, Social Welfare Department in the ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Christian Ogbu describes them as nation builders. 

Ogbu made the remarks in Abakaliki on Thursday during a road walk and market sensitisation to eradicate gender violence in the state and to mark end of 16 days activism which was embarked on Nov 25.

The ministry with support of EU-UN spotlight initiative, commemorate the year 2020, 16 days of activism on elimination of gender based violence against women and girls in state. 

She said that theme of the 16 days activism "Orange the world : fund, respond, prevent, collect" were sign of good things if women and girl a taken care of. 

"The awareness creation will make more women to report any case of gender violence against them,"Ogbu said. 

The Women Rights Activist and member International Female of Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria, Ebonyi Branch, Mrs Nkem Chukwu said ignorant of the law is not an excuse as the law would be used against any perpetrators of such crime. 

Chukwu called on parent to educate both their male and female children for better development of the society. 

"Women should take advantage of the State Agency For Mass Literacy to be skillful and productive in the society. 

"And perpetrators of rape and other forms of violence against women and girls would be punished, accordingly with the Law if found guilty," Chukwu warned. 

The commissioner for Market Development and Management, Mrs Deborah Okah assured commitment to end all forms of violence against women in the state.

Okah said that the crusade would be carried out to all women assemblies in the state to promote gender justice.

She enjoined women to take advantage of the adult literacy programme to be educative and be productive people in the society and country at large. 

The Agency reports that the road walk procession with various inscriptions to end the trend, commenced from the ministry complex to the Margaret Umahi International Market. 


The agency also reports that the walk featured the Nigerian Red Cross Society, FIDA, Police, Road safety among other stakeholders.
