Career choice, practice and the change of narratives in Nigeria

... Today,  the entire narratives have changed. It's no longer highly fashionable or covetous being a Law, Engineering or Medicine and Surgery student. Witch doctors now call themselves Doctors... Now in Nigeria, lawyers are becoming Ministers of, and Commissioners for Works and Housing. Lawyers are now Information Commissioners. Medical Doctors are Commissioners for Lands and Survey. Surveyors, Commissioners for Trade and Commerce. Many sources of illicit wealth acquisition are out: Internet fraud, drug peddling, Ponzi schemes, sports betting, etc. Kidnapping is no longer in vogue. Highway robbery is fast fizzling away, Nwoba Chika Nwoba, the APC Publicity Secretary in Ebonyi State and a Public Affairs Analyst writes:

In the days of yore, when you heard that someone was studying Law, Engineering, Medicine and Surgery, such a person was seen as having arrived with the parents feeling on top of the roof. On getting admission into university the person was automatically called Barr, Dr or Engr. Everyone else thought that only parents who were able to enroll their wards into these three fields of study had what it takes to be called rich. Students into these categories carried themselves invincibly, moreover ones their parents based in the rural settings.

Everyone thought that wealth making was only through the course of study one undertook in school. Parents whose wards were in school studying Law and Medicine and Surgery intimidated folks in their areas with braggadocio. Their villages gave them special treatments for the singular reason that their children were at the verge of becoming rich in life.

Some communities through community efforts enrolled their perceived intelligent ones into Law Faculty so they could stand in for them should there be intercommunity commotion in the future. They believed such individuals could deliver the community from the cesspools of intimidation and unemployment. But unfortunately, they later turned to become headaches to the community. It's hard to find anyone trained in school through community effort who later lived in peace with the community or did any good for them.

But today, the entire narratives have changed. It's no longer highly fashionable or covetous being a Law, Engineering or Medicine and Surgery student. Witch doctors now call themselves Doctors. Building artisans now call themselves Engineers. Lawyers who can't prepare land purchase agreement are ubiquitous. Nobody gives a hoot about one's course of study nowadays. Architecture was not recognized in the past, but they are fast overtaking Engineering effects now. Anybody can become journalist now. Advertisers are no longer those who studied advertising in school. Movie, music, comedy and football stars have taken over and doing it well.
Comedy just surfaced. Comedy skits now are overtaking Nollywood films. Comedians are now Masters of Ceremonies, fast taking over from on- air -personalities.

Highway robbery is fast fizzling away.

What are all these things teaching us? Everybody should go get one or two skills or craft. Civil service is no longer fashionable. Soon, political office will be boring to occupy. Formal education certificates are fast becoming useless. Soon, those who didn't see the four walls of formal education will begin to speak in good English grammar. Talent and skill are taking over. Let's not be left out. Big English grammar no longer pays; the usefulness of it pays.

Our government at various levels are bringing these realities close to us by virtue of their penurious leadership. A time shall come government in Nigeria or Africa will be governed by the ordinary people. Time shall come when the usefulness of the conventional security apparats will be useless.

Search yourself very well to know that endowment in you which if found and developed could feed a generation and begin to do something about it. Even this post I have made is a source of livelihood itself. Everyone of us has a gracious endowment. No one is without any. It's just that we go all out searching for big things outside with great effort when they are with us and can be explored with less effort.

I didn't come in peace!
