Umahi decries ENDSARS protests hijacked by hoodlums

Governor David Umahi has condemned the hoodlums operating in disguise of EndSARS protesters hijacking peaceful protests by destroying lives and properties in Ebonyi State and other parts of Nigeria.

This was contained in a statement issued by Francis Nwaze, the special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity.

The statement said, the Governor has again in a state wide broadcast sent his condolences to the people who lost their lives as a result of the unfortunate twist of the peaceful #EndSARS protest in the whole nation.

The state further reads: "It is very unfortunate that hoodlums and criminals have hijacked this peaceful protest and in the southeast, they are killing, they are burning strategic government's infrastructure, they are burning police stations, they are looting and inflicting injuries on our people.

"This act of hooliganism is unacceptable by our people and that is why the Southeast Governors and our leaders met today and asked me to appeal to our people to stop making very provocative statements that will endanger the lives of our people outside the Southeast.

"We condemn very seriously, the killings of security agents in the country. And we commend them for their patience, understanding and maturity. We all know the meaning of being armed and yet tolerant.

"We are still appealing to security agents to please, exercise more patience in handling it. This is a phase and it has come to go.

"Therefore, we ask, all the imported thugs, all the imported criminals into Ebonyi state, to please leave the state. The curfew is still on but we can give you free access to leave. You remain our children no matter where you came from.

"My heart is bleeding, the way and manner the very expensive infrastructure we put in place in Ebonyi State is being destroyed by these hoodlums, especially the decorative lights, the streetlights and fountains. It goes to show they never loved our modest strides and that they are envious of them.

"I want to thank the LGA chairmen, councilors, the youths and others who have risen to defend the state. We ask you to do everything possible to flush out all these intruders and criminals out of the state peacefully.

"I hereby ask the security agents to do everything within the law to defend the state. These criminals must be flushed out of the state.

"I want to thank Ebonyians for standing with us at a very critical period like this. Please reach out to your loved ones outside Ebonyi State and find out if they are safe. If there are challenges, my phone numbers are open, so that I will contact the Governors of the states where they are staying.

"Thank you all and God bless you."
