Nwebonyi to Govs: Emulate Buhari on teachers' welfare packages

By Victor Nwegede

The Ebonyi State Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),  Barr. Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi has commended President Muhammadu Buhari's approval of welfare packages for Nigerian teachers.

Nwebonyi described the teachers' welfare packages as a welcome development, and however, asked the Nigerian Governors and other stakeholders in the education sector to complement the gesture by Mr. President.

The Ebonyi PDP Boss made this statement while briefing newsmen on Tuesday at Abakaliki, the state capital.

His words: "The approval of a special salary scale and other incentives for teachers in basic and secondary schools in Nigeria by President Muhammad Buhari is milestone in the quest for the development of this country. Also to benefit from the incentives reeled out by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu are students of education in universities and colleges of education, as well as automatic employment for education graduates.

"This is a welcome development. The standard of education in has fallen so low that average Nigerians no longer send their children to public schools, and well to ones even send their own children abroad for studies. This has been the worst undoing of governments, especially since the return to civilian rule.
Structural dilapidation, lack of motivation on the side of teachers due to poor remuneration, and lack of teaching aids and facilities in our public schools have led to moral decadence and among pupils and students, including cultism, and the overall fall in the standard of education in Nigeria.

"With the new packages provided by Mr. President, the situation will begin to improve automatically and return Nigeria to its glory in terms of education if Buhari implements them without allowing corruption to creep in.

"I commend Mr. President highly and enjoin state governors, local government chairman and stakeholders in the education sector to complement the gesture of Mr. President and ensure that the benefits get to every teacher in the country. The National Assembly should also enact laws that will sanction sabotage in this area severely.

"Once again, I commend President Buhari highly for this singular gesture and pray that the Almighty God will give him the wisdom to leave enduring positive legacies for Nigerians when he leaves office."
