The Nigerian Bar Association, Abakaliki Branch, marked its 2024 Law Week celebrations with a dinner and award night that brought together prominent members of the legal community and government officials. The event, held at the prestigious Remeritona Hotel and Suites in Abakaliki on April 27th 2024, provided a platform to recognise excellence in the legal profession and foster collaboration to advance justice.
In his welcome address, NBA Abakaliki Chairman, Sir Chigozie Nwankwo, thanked the Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, for sponsoring the week-long celebrations. Also speaking, Law Week Planning Committee Chairman, Festus Sunday Nweke, commended the Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Moses Ije Odunwa, for his commitment to working with the Bar on people-centred legislations.
A highlight of the event was the compelling speech delivered by Chukwuka Ikwuazom, SAN, on ,'The Role of Lawyers in Containing Security Challenges in Nigeria' Ikwuazom eloquently highlighted the critical nexus between insecurity and governance, underscoring lawyers' role in curbing Nigeria's security challenges through advocacy for good governance and public interest litigation. He further emphasized the imperative for the NBA to address poverty among its members, empowering them to effectively fulfill their pivotal role as custodians of justice.
Representing His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice Dr. Ben Uruchi Odoh reaffirmed the administration's support for citizens' welfare and judicial financial autonomy in Ebonyi State. He also stressed lawyers’ responsibility to uphold ethical conduct. Awards were also presented to distinguished individuals for their contributions, including the Governor, Speaker, and Dr. Odoh for his Outstanding Mentorship Role at the Ministry of Justice.
The successful event highlighted the NBA's collaboration with the government in prioritizing lawyers' welfare and citizens' rights. It was a testament to the strong working relationship between the legal fraternity and authorities in advancing justice in Ebonyi State.
