#EndSARS: Commissioner seeks mass participation in Ebonyi youth summit

The Ebonyi Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr Charlse Akpuenika has called for mass participation of youths in the forthcoming state’s #EndSARS youth summit.

Akpuenika who is also the secretary to the state government’s committee on the summit said this in an interview in Abakaliki.

The commissioner said that summit would give youths the freedom of expressing their views on the best governance mode for the state and country.

“The state governor while addressing the #EndSARS protesters in 2020 pledged to create a forum where youth would gather and air their opinions on governance and articulate best approaches towards it.

“This summit would therefore, create a platform for youths to engage leaders on pertinent issues affecting Ebonyi and Nigeria.

“The state ministry of youth development and sports commend the state governor for this noble idea and pledge to play its part in ensuring its success,” he said.

He said that the summit’s participants would cut across youths from the 13 local government areas of the state, various youth groups, civil society organization among other stakeholders.

“The government would not interfere in the summit’s deliberations but would allow the youths articulate ideas that would improve governance in the state and country.

“The youth are expected to articulate their views, make adequate recommendations which would be reviewed and implemented by the government,” he said.

Akpuenika said that the Ebonyi government was youth friendly as it had economically empowered several youths and offered them opportunities to participate in governance.

“Many youths in the state have been elected into various political positions while others have been appointed as commissioners, special advisers, executive assistants, technical assistants among other positions.

Mr Amechi Aloh, Head of Youth Development in the ministry said in related development, that recommendations from the summit would guide the leaders on ways of improving governance.

“The summit would also proffer ways youths can partner with the government for development and ensure that the aims of the #EndSARS agitations were not in vain,” he said.
